The Baltimore bars open past 2 a.m. on New Year's Eve

6015546-29094127.jpgEveryone's doing something special for New Year's Eve. The MTA will offer free public transportation until 2 a.m. and the Charm City Circulator will work until 1 a.m.

At the Inner Harbor, the city will have its annual fireworks spectacular.

Parking meters will be free on New Year's Day.

And, most importantly to Midnight Sun readers, many Baltimore bars will stay open past 2 a.m. (not that the MTA got that memo.)

In the interest of service journalism, here is a working list of those bars that are extending operating hours.

Most places don't have a set closing time - when called to confirm hours, bartenders usually answered with a variation of "whenever people stop getting bombed," which is 4 a.m. (Ale's Mary's) at some places or 6 a.m. (Dionysus) at others, depending on their clientele.

Several bars will even offer complimentary champagne toasts, while others - like Brewer's Art, for example - will just be open their regular hours. B&O American Brasserie is staying open past 2 a.m. for an after party, but all tickets have been sold out.

New Year's Eve is the only day of the year when bars can stay open past 2 a.m.

Bars can do this thanks to a state law that applies only to the city. Stephan Fogleman, of the Baltimore city liquor board, explains the law's history here.

Bars closing at 2 a.m.: Pratt Street Alehouse, Mama's on the Half Shell, Funky Buddha's bar, Explorer's Lounge, the Dizz, Birds of a Feather (closing at midnight), Brewer's Art, Nacho Mama's, Charles Village Pub.

As much as i hate to say it, the cool kids don't go out on NYE.. you're working or you're home. I'm not a fan of amateur night, be it NYE, Halloween, or St Patty's day. People who don't drink drink too much, and that is when the stupid starts to happen. Stay safe out there, and tip your 'tenders.

I'm with you, Baltimocker. It's impossible to get around with the masses of people and I get grumpy when I'm packed in a bar like a sardine... I'm leaning towards staying in this year and going out for a big booze brunch on the 1st when everyone else is hungover.

I like to head out at 2am on NYE once all the amateurs have packed it in. Partying that late with so many pros has a very Euro feel to it. I like to take advantage of the only night our city comes close to rivaling the pubs of London, Milan, Bratislava, Dublin, or Transylvania.

The Rowan Tree is open all night long for NYE.

Don't Know Tavern will be open til around 4am, then reopen at 10am for New Year's Day bowl games.

The party of them all is, the "40 Hours of No Idea". No Idea Tavern will be open all night long, from 10am, December 31st til 2am, January 2nd.

It's actually a good time, just people getting off of work, having a drink or two.!/event.php?eid=174038929282041

Have a Happy New Year's!

PS, We will pay for your cab fare** to No Idea, call for details. Please don't drink and drive on NYE.

One Eyed Mike's usually goes to 9 AM. It's the place to see all your bartenders at 4 AM.

Except for the Max's crew that have to do inventory after they shut down.

You might as well stay out as late as you can - getting a cab at 2am on NYE is basically impossible, and that TIPSY TAXI the city advertises either never picks up the phone or never shows up.

the horse you came in on will be open till 9am

It makes me cringe when I read posts about people thinking they are "too cool" to celebrate NYE with all the "amateurs". Get over yourselves.

Club Reality will be open until 6am on buffet, champagne toast, party favors and breakfast!! Tickets on sale now @2625 Washington Blvd..$25

too many cops hang outside of ClubReality!

I second that Id, Baltimocker an Co. are just bitter they have to work on New Year's Eve!! Party on Baltimore, this is our night to pretend we have a post 2AM late curfew like other big cities!!

My friend and I plan to attend the Inner Harbor NYE Fireworks for our first time. Would anyone who has attended the fireworks in the past, describe the atmosphere before, during and after them.

What is traffic like post fireworks and will OPCY have their parking lots open?

Elliott's Pour House in Brewer's Hill will be open until 10am, breakfast buffet at 4

@Jeff- what time does Elliot's Pour House open on Saturday for the bowl games? Don't they start at noon?

Might as well stay open all night.

Down the Hatch will be open all night with complimentary food starting at 8pm & a Champagne toast at Midnight. They also have a great view of the Inner Harbors fireworks or you can walk right down the Street to Tide Point for a perfect view!

It is fun to go out about 4-5 AM and see what kind of critters are at the local bars. I usually start @ One Eyed Mikes, 4 AM on New Years Day you get a nice mix of folks who have been at it all night, those getting off work, and some you just don't know about! Earlier in the evening Bar on Lancaster has a weird mix, it's better than cable. Getting into Maxs' is usually impossible, but looks like fun.
