The Laughing Pint: Your No. 1 Baltimore Bar

It's not Charles Village Pub. Or Brewer's Art, as many readers snarkily predicted it would be. Instead no. 1 on our list of Baltimore's best bars is the quintessential neighborhood bar, The Laughing Pint.

The Laughing Pint embodies many qualities some of the other city bars possess. It's personable - owner Shannon Cassidy bartends regularly; it appeals to both natives and arrivistes. And most importantly, it's a melting pot. It invites mingling.

Readers will inevitably disagree. One of the challenges of lists like this is that popular places are left out. In Baltimore, it's especially challenging to rank bars because there's no deficit of good ones.

But in writing the list, we didn't just consider the places with the best cocktails -- B&O American Brasserie placed tenth -- or the diviest -- Leon's got no. 32. We looked at character, the bar's history, and where it fits in the city's colorful scene. We also wanted to be inclusive, ranking bars from several different neighborhoods that cater to varied crowds.

Readers have named some of the bars they think were left out in several different posts. This might be the place to compile them all in one location. The floor is yours.

Can't believe Looney's didn't make the list and I'm no fan but come on, it's one of the busiest most established bars in canton square.

also I went Club Charles for the 1st and last time about a month ago declaring the worst bar I'd been to in the past decade - not surprised to find it in your top 10.

"The Laughing Pint: Your No. 1 Baltimore Bar" as handed down to you by three sun employees.

Would be awesome if it was actually set up via a poll, etc.

Oh, but @j, I did ask readers: http://bit.ly/9AVNlB. And we took those suggestions very seriously.

Wow, this blog must really be behind the times.

From a quick search, I count seven "Laughing Pint" mentions (including this post and not including comments) in the entire history of this blog. Why the lack of press for the city's "No. 1" bar??

how is somebody who has only been in Baltimore for a month or two even remotely qualified to attempt to write about the top 50 bars?

I know you took suggestions which is why I said I wish it was a real poll. Now that would be interesting. I hate random lists that aren't done by votes.

I do want to check out the Laughing Pint. I hear nothing but good things.

"And we took those suggestions very seriously. "

Sure you did. It's fairly obvious that The Laughing Pint was your #1 regardless. There is not a single mention of it in the linked post among 125 comments.

hey give the guy a break, he is new to the city, but lets let him get acclamated to it, and Sessa has his back and I'm sure had the final say so on this, yes Lonneys and a couple of other sports bars should have been included, but don't think that's what they were going for

Jeeeeeez. Grow up people. Magazines, newspapers and websites use this sort of gimmick to stir up people and create hits or buzz for their medium. Putting something not obvious at the top is a perfect way to get more attention.

Now back to bones, doggies.

I demand a recount!!!! But then again, you can't go wrong with a bar that has a great beer selection, ping pong table and a shuffleboard table. Which there was something like that in South Baltimore.

Congratulatons to The Laughing Pint!

Hooray for Laughing Pint! It's been one of my favorite places since I first set foot in it over three years ago. Well deserved!

Looneys not on the list is absurd. Then again, is any bar on the square on the list? How do you omit every bar from one of the most travelled neighborhoods in Baltimore?

And if you're judging based on charm and character and bars being a part of a neighborhood, where is Frazier's???

To of the people with the negative comments: you should swing by one of these days and observe the dynamic. It is a little different than most bar in that there there are no TVs or loud music. Instead this place invites conversation and interaction between friends and strangers.

I am actually headed there now. . .

Aren't the popular bars busy for a reason? Rename this list, Baltimore's best bars not counting any that are popular..No problem with some of the bars on your list, put not adding ones because they are popular (Looney's, Nacho Mammas, even Kislings etc) is absurd. Those 3 have been around for over 15 years for a reason.. Not one Canton Square bar either. Maybe spend more then a month in the city before trying to come up with this list

Please rename list.."My" not "Your" top 50 Bars. would make alot more sense

@j
You said you took the readers opinions very seriously. In what regards? Almost every post mentions a bar in the main drag of Canton, Fell's Point, and Federal Hill. You mention only a handful from Federal Hill, Fell's Point and NONE from Canton Square. You call that "seriously" taking people's opinion into consideration? I beg to differ.

I'm sure most of these bars are great, but you need to rename your list. Seriously.

Wow, you people just don't get it. Lists are always arbitrary. They are SUPPOSED to make you crazy. Web sites thrive on attention not love.

Also, why would you want your favorite bar on a lunch meat list? None of my favorite bars are on the list and that makes me happy because none of them will be filled with the kind of dopes who flock to list bars.

Go meat!

Best>most popular. Did someone just compare Laughing Pint to LOONEY'S? Are you serious?

Anyone who has commented negatively about the Pint has obviously never been there. And unfortunately it's going to go from amazing pub with friendly employees, locals, and ownership, great food, a shuffleboard table, ping pong table and 50 cent pool (did I mention amazing food?) to a tourist attraction.

And no, I don't work there. I've just been hoping that nobody discovers this place so that it keeps it's neighborhood bar appeal.

I think there is a better bar in my basement!! Sam u suck. Get out a bit

Arbitrary is fine - but how did you leave off all of Canton Square? JD's? Nacho Mama? Caladaughs? Mama'a?!

poorly researched

Canton Square has no character whatsoever. Every bar is generic and full of the same kind of (pretty) people. Hats off to Midnight Sun for snubbing it.

LOONEY's WOOHOO

JD'S WOOHOO

@ Meathead
Double fist pump for the Brohams.

WOO HOO

I can't believe Shirley's Honey Hole didn't make the cut. :-(

@ Jason Z.

I have No Idea what your talking about, please enlighten the message board.

No one was comapring any of the bars. They were stating how do you do a est of List and exclude Bars because they are popular

No one was comparing any bars. The complaint was, that to exclude any Bar for being Popular is ridiculous. What is a Best of list for? 1/4 of the Bars on list would be on any list anyway..but the others, come on

Still kinda upset that FRaziers isn't on there. It is the perfect Hampden neighborhood bar. Morgan was ranked the third best bartender in Baltimore by the voters in B. The food is great, the beer is cheap. It has its silly traditions and games that have evolved because of the locals (honestly, in the front bar play "Private Eyes" on a crowded Friday.)

Locals and transplants mix and mingle regularly in a friendly atmosphere. Fraziers is a great place and deserved a spot on this list over compete meat-head bars like McGerks.

The Laughing Pint has an ambiance to it that I have not seen at any other bars in Baltimore. People will talk to you and even end up playing games with you (pool, shuffle board, drinking games) who you might not interact with at other bars. And yes it is a melting pot - it attracts people across class levels and cultural backgrounds, and people really seem connect there. That's why I think it's a great bar.

All these slack-jawed yokels crying for canton square bars should spend some time out of their comfort zone and explore much more interesting neighborhoods like highlandtown. You'll be glad you did.

I love the laughing pint, but it's the other side of town for me. How about a little love for Zella's and Patrick's of Pratt and the west side in general?

Arguing over an opinionated list is obsured. How come no-one mentioned my bar, yadda yadda. Then, start your own site (if you haven't already) and make up your own list.

Problems...???

Hey bonnie,

I'll join ya for a pint at Patrick's and a pie at Zella's anytime!

Also, I don't think it ever said anything about bars being omitted BECAUSE they are popular...it just turned out that some popular bars were omitted. Popular doesn't equal great...Jackass 3D was the most popular movie this week.

I liked a lot of the bars, don't know a lot so I can't comment. Other than the omission of Frazier's, I am OK with this.
Go meat!

It was stated in the article, creating these list are hard because we try not to pick any bars that are popular..read the previous threads

@drunk richard

HAHA. if you're one who thinks Looney's is great then nobody wants you at Club Charles anyway.

@scott

learn to read as- clown, 1st post of this entire debacle says:

"can't believe Looney's didn't make the list and I'M NO FAN"

I'm NO FAN!

moron

That's said club charles is the biggest POS i've ever been to.

I guess i should consider myself lucky I didn't get stabbed on the way back to the hollowed out row house some angry Jamaicans charged me $5 to park in when I got there.

Congrats on being a failure who hangs out on a terrible excuse for bar.

Drunk Richard,

You need to calm down a little.

Your cyber friend,

Josh

@drunk richard they may have been angry but I doubt they were Jamaican #iknowblackpeople

I agree with several people on this comment list in stating the biased area in which many of these bars were mentioned. Leaving out several well established and new great bars in the areas of Fells Point, Canton Square and Federal Hill, Locust Point and Hampden. I may agree with about a third of this list but as many people agree, the majority of these bars on the list can be found in a certain area of the city obviously frequented by the person compiling the list or the people helping him. Maybe the phrase "best" should be evaluated into just one person's opinion because each blurb was so obscure the 15 on this list I had never heard of I won't even venture out of my element to visit even though they made this list.
