They have a different promotion every night of the week, including game day and a karaoke night on Thursdays. Definitely a pleasant surprise!

Maybe you should define a bar that has some food and not restaurant with a bar. Any place with outdoor seating is considered a restaurant. Another factor is if the place has more "sit down" table service than bar space. Rocket to venus and ale marry's are restaurants with outdoor seating.

@ Evan
I almost think the Metro should get extra points for their incredibly awful service. Service-wise, some of the experiences I and some of my friends have had there have been nothing short of mind boggling. Yet despite all that, they keep on plugging along (even after they closed for the better part of a year after an electrical fire).
That being said, the food is very good and they have a great drink selection... I just remind friends visiting for the first time to keep their sense of humor and they should be fine.

peter, you said "Maybe you should define a bar that has some food and not restaurant with a bar. Any place with outdoor seating is considered a restaurant. Another factor is if the place has more "sit down" table service than bar space. Rocket to venus and ale marry's are restaurants with outdoor seating. "
i think that is not true. a bar is any place people go to get drinks. your ratio rules to me are very silly. plenty of people only drink at rocket to venus, just like plenty of people only drank and didn't eat at the atlas bar.
rocket to venus has a huge , lovely, horseshoe shaped bar, and stops serving food after 11 pm. they're open for 68 hours a week , and 23 of those hours the kitchen isn't open. so yeah.

Really people? Looneys? Erik - Please disregard all who say Looneys is a great bar. In two words - No and Trash. That place is disgusting and full of underclothed 21 yr old girls, bachelor/bachelorette parties, and creepy out of towner old guys. No and no. During the day - maybe, maybe I will have a beer there. But only if my BSSC team forces and bribes me. And even then I will sit outside. Ugh I can smell the jager bombs and desperation from here.
Good call on Brewer's Art though. That's your best bar for sure.

Max's - 100+ taps. One of the best beer bars in the US.

"You will wake up with creeping crud all over your mouth."
@ Easeside
Personally, I think Wayne (Mahaffey's owner) is a pretty good guy. He certainly isn't perfect, and he probably likes his Maker's Mark a bit too much for his own good, but I've never had a bad time from him or his staff the times I've stopped by (and that's pretty often).
On the other hand, based on the comment above, it's pretty clear you know him a great deal better that I do (and for that matter, better than I ever want to get to know him). So I'll defer to your expertise in this matter, and will try not to even speculate how you came about such personalized knowledge.
Posted by: JohnM. | September 30, 2010 10:25 AM
Maybe I'm one of the many cooks he's fired over the last 4 years. He goes through about one a month. Word to the wise to those working at the new place: keep an updated resume at all times and dont buy that new car just yet.
Posted by: Easeside | September 30, 2010 11:03 AM
@JohnM
You don't mean Metro Gallery, do you? They haven't closed for any fires - that I know of.
Posted by: Anonymous | September 30, 2010 12:15 PM
Metro Gallery is in Station North, a gallery with no food.
Metropolitan is in Federal Hill, with great food and beer and frequently horrible service.
Rodos insiders - we get the idea already, you can stop the spamming already.
Easeside - I have no knowledge of any of what you said, been there maybe once or twice, but geez, way to libel a guy on this forum. I think you oughta grow some balls and use your real name before you do crap like that, and I think the forum oughta just take that down anyway.
Posted by: Anonymous | September 30, 2010 12:45 PM
@Easeside- That description that you wrote about, could easily describe 25%of the bar owners in general. I am still mad that the TCU field goal kicker couldn't kick that extra point, are you kidding me!
I have never heard anything but great things about Mahaffey's, maybe he has high expectations for his staff. I haven't walked a mile in his shoes.
Posted by: Jason Z | September 30, 2010 1:25 PM
1- The old Hammerjacks. $10 would get you a red cup that you could fill with anything you wanted on a Thursday night
2-Nevin's. What a place. Only in Baltimore can such a random assortment of people gather
3-Horse You Came In On.
4-Latin Palace. Never has there been such an excellent place to make the evening into a joke.
5-Looney's/ Caladaugh. So trashy but so good. I love when Dundalkians come out to play mixed with the usual crowd of Canton.
6-Max's
7-Mic O Shea s
8-Life of Riely
9-No Idea
10-Riliegh's/ Stalking Horse/ McGirks/ Mad River. All kind of the same bar.
11- Brewer's Art
12-Waterfront Hotel/ Coopers/ Woody's Rum Bar
13-Pickles Pub
14-Field House
15-Little Carl's Fun House (Pigtown) / Razor's (Riverside)/ Jack's Lighthouse
16-XS/ Turps
17-Kislings
18-Swallow at the Hollow/ Craig's
19-The New Porters. John's a good guy.
20-CVP in Charles Village (although the one in Towson is better)
21-The Reserve
22-Dog Pub. Excellent Pizza and very easy to get very drunk.
23-Alexanders in Fells Pt. Always a good time.
24-Quigley's. Definately under rated spot in Ridgely's Delight
25-PJs pub
And Rodos is not a cool bar. I'm sorry. That place makes Fells look disgraceful.
And bring back Preakness with all you can drink.

Mahaffeys Pub! I work for Wayne and we are all very grateful to work for him! He has made Mahaffeys pub a fun, friendly, and sometimes a bit crazy place to be. I wouldn't even use the word crazy. I like to think of it as entertaining! And so do all the other people that frequent this bar every day! He has worked so hard over the past 10 years to make mahaffeys, his and everyone else that comes in, feel like this is their second home. In a week, we all will have a third home, A third home that Wayne has worked hard to open! He did not just "get" this bar! He worked for it!
So please raise your glass of stoli citrus and lemonade(thats his drink of choice, not makers mark) and lets give a toast to Wayne Mahaffey!

Posted by: Anonymous | September 30, 2010 2:14 PM
The more I hear about Rodos, the less I wanna go.
I'm allergic to unabashed shill.
I'd rather go to Elliott's Pour House.
Or even Canton Art's & Entertainment.
Maybe even Taps!

Hands down Looney's Pub is the best bar around. They always have a drink for me as soon as I walk in the door.

I frequently brave unwanted buttgrabbings to get the $0.25 Everclear cherries as I pass by Rodos, but the cherries are the only reason EVER to go there. Place is seriously gross. Good grassroots effort though, guys.
As far as the question at hand, though, "Best" Bar? ... I dunno; it depends. Gives you lots of great tips on places to check out though, Erik!

RODOS FOR PRESIDENT!!!

I would have to say Looney's Pub also. They always make me feel welcome and I always meet new friends while I am there..Great staff, awesome food, and you can always watch any game that is being played anywhere on the planet. Give them credit, they were the first bar in Canton before Canton was "Canton"..Back then, highlandtowners wouldn't even say they were from Canton. Now look at it. Now they have spots all around town and are having the same success..I think i'll head there tonight

Posted by: TRACY | September 30, 2010 9:38 PM
If it's the cherries you're looking for, you can just get them at Baltimore's #1 bar - Mt. Royal Tavern, no shills necessary.
I don't remember how much they cost because !@# you up, if the aforementioned stiff and cheap drinks inexplicably didn't...

Couldn't agree more. Also, glad to hear he's moved on from his MM and 7-up days. Stoli citrus and lemonade definitely represents a step up and, hopefully, slows down his intake a bit as well. In any event, regardless of what his current drink of choice is, I've always found Wayne to be a very good guy (and with one of the more phenomenal memories for names that I've ever seen). Cheers!
