What are Baltimore's top 25 bars?

Readers, we're working on a list of the best bars in the city. Not strictly sports bars, which Midnight Sun ranked last weekend. Just best bars.

Rankings are subjective and arbitrary, but like the old TV Guide or the a farmer's almanac they help us organize our increasingly chaotic lives.

So, best bars? What makes it the best is not just price, or its menu. It should also be character, history, and its customers.

Write your suggestions in the comments.

1. Brewers Art. This is not opinion, but fact.

Rec Room - friendly staff, great food, awesome nightly specials, & a fantastic atmosphere (especially on the back patio when it's nice out!)

He specified City. Towson is not the city. Save your shill for another post.

B&O American Brasserie! Brendan's drinks are always amazing!

Wharf Rat in Fells

The Point in Fells
The Horse You Came in On
Todd Connors
Magerks
Stackhouse in Canton
Turp's

BL Lounge in Arbutus, below Whalen's Irish Pub on Maiden Choice Rd. I just discovered this place. The people who work there are incredibly friendly and welcoming. They have a different promotion every night of the week, including game day and a karaoke night on Thursdays. Definitely a pleasant surprise!

Club Charles, still going strong!

For conversations with strangers: Mums.
For re-living the undergrad days: PJ's Pub
For beer selection: Max's
For board meetings: Brewers Art
For morning bloody marys: Mothers
For feeling like an extra in a John Waters movie: Koko's Pub
For feeling like an extra in the Wire: the Haven
For feeling like I'm back in my grandmothers basement: J. Patricks

Oh man, this post is going to be Shill City.

Factors for my "best bars" are mainly atmosphere, menu, and price.

Pub Dog
Bartenders
Don't Know Tavern
Ale Marys
Waterfront

Shirley's Honey Hole!!!!

For sheer Baltimore weirdness mixed with good prices I'm going with The Drinkery.

Most improved bar is "The whistling Oyster"

Brewer's Art, Wharf Rat, The Dizz, Max's, Club Charles, Mick O'Shea's

The Mt. Vernon Stable- best you can meet a millionaire and a homeless person in there bar
Turps- best Sports bar and you feel like you're in college prices
O'Shea's- a pub's pub
McGerk's- giving me a taste of my hometown bar
The Place- best black bar you won't get kilt in
Nevin's- best you don't have to know how to sing karaoke bar
Ryleigh's- best crab deal with horrible service bar
Brewar's Art- best beer and fries in Bmore bar
Doughtery's- best pitcher of beer and pool bar
Mt. Royal Tavern- best I can get hammered for $10 and don't care if the bathroom smells like prison bar

Koopers Tavern. Hands up, hands down, hands everywhere in between

Max's is by far the best bar in the city. Any beer you could ever want. Bartenders who know about all the beers and know their customers well enough to have their favorite drink ready as soon as you get to the bar. Great people watching.

Mahaffey's
Johnny Rad's
Brewer's Art
Max's
Annabel Lee
Jack's Bistro
Pub (Thirsty) Dog
Dionysus
Metro Gallery
Fraiser's
Spirits
Peter's Inn
Ale Mary's
Red Star

Max's has the ambiance of a Hooters. Great beer selection, though.

Brewer's Art (overall)
Wharf Rat
Owl Bar (historic)
Diz (neighborhood)

Kooper's Tavern. Great burgers, great beer selection and low meat-head factor. Plus one or two surly bartenders who really have hearts of gold.

Looney's Pub, the best by far!

In no particular order:

Looney's - Canton
Nacho Mamas
Frazier's
Bad Decisions
J A Murphy's
The Waterfront Hotel
Holy Frijoles
Stackhouse
Claddagh Pub
Mick O'Sheas
The Dizz
Red Star
Portside Tavern
Mother's
Ale Mary's
The Horse You Came In On

Mahaffey's - Insane happy hour prices on great rotating beer selection, friendly staff and customers, only a couple blocks from my house!

Club Charles
Brewer's Art
Ale Mary's
Jack's Bistro
Nacho Mamma's
Waterfront
The Dizz
Idle Hour

I'm sure there are plenty I've never been to that could make this list.

1) MAX'S (fun, busy atmosphere; great staff and large/constantly changing beer selection)
2) JD's SMOKEHOUSE (makes Canton feel like home; best happy hour around - all beers $2)
3) SIDEBAR (definitely Baltimore: people drinking off their bad day working for a flawed institution)

Without a doubt..Looney's Pub Best pub grub, staff, place to watch anything, Best bands and overall atmosphere. And without a doubt, more regulars than most other bars combined. With a 4th location opening in College Park, easily accessible from anywhere around town. Hands down the very best

the atlas bar , when it reopens! (but i am biased)
the mount royal tavern, always and forever
the b&o tavern in sowebo
long johns, on 29th street
the idle hour in fed hill/locust point
the back stretch in medfield
1919 , in fells point (BEAUTIFUL interior)
burke's cafe (downtown)
the harbor way inn (downtown)
the ottobar
holy frijoles
captain larrys
rocket to venus, depending on the bartenders
the wind-up (great art shows)
the brewers art
bad decisions (selection)
club charles
the gallery bar
dionysus
several block bars
the bloody bucket

Strange that no one has mentioned Tiki Barge yet...

here's five that would easily fit somewhere in my top 25:

American Harry's
Mount Royal Tavern
That Place Where I Got Iced in Dundalk
Metropolitan - legendarily lacking in service but absolutely amazing food and selection
Patrick's

Honorable Mentions:
XTREME Cilantro
C.H.U.D.s, the place for C.H.U.D.s

Maybe you should define a bar that has some food and not restaurant with a bar. Any place with outdoor seating is considered a restaurant. Another factor is if the place has more "sit down" table service than bar space. Rocket to venus and ale marry's are restaurants with outdoor seating.

Mama's on the Half Shell
Shuckers
Pub Dog

Looney's - Canton - Best bar food around(especially the wings), crazy(cheap) drink prices and one of the best beer selections, a great, friendly crowd, and always something to watch on a ton of tv's

According to Peter's: "Maybe you should define a bar that has some food and not restaurant with a bar. Any place with outdoor seating is considered a restaurant. Another factor is if the place has more "sit down" table service than bar space"

Max's isn't a bar.

bad definition Peter

off the top of my head these are probably the places i frequent the most along with the places i go out of my way to go to when i haven't been in a while:

bars for good beer:
brewers art
max's
mahaffeys
ale mary's (and for their bread pudding)
dionysus
muggsy's mug house

sports bars:
Turps
Don't Know
City Limits
Looneys

Bars when hungry too:
B&O
Marie Louise bistro (upstairs bar)
George's in Peabody Court Hotel
John Stevens
Dudas Tavern

Bars with can't-put-my-finger-on-it appeal :
Idle Hour
The Dizz
Rocket to Venus
Funky Buddha
Wind Up Space
Nacho Mammas
Club Charles

Dive Bars:
Bar (fells)
Down The Hatch (Locust Point)
Banners (locust point)
Sports Cafe (canton)
Dougherty's (Mt. Vernon-ish)

@ Evan

I almost think the Metro should get extra points for their incredibly awful service. Service-wise, some of the experiences I and some of my friends have had there have been nothing short of mind boggling. Yet despite all that, they keep on plugging along (even after they closed for the better part of a year after an electrical fire).

That being said, the food is very good and they have a great drink selection... I just remind friends visiting for the first time to keep their sense of humor and they should be fine.

peter, you said "Maybe you should define a bar that has some food and not restaurant with a bar. Any place with outdoor seating is considered a restaurant. Another factor is if the place has more "sit down" table service than bar space. Rocket to venus and ale marry's are restaurants with outdoor seating. "

i think that is not true. a bar is any place people go to get drinks. your ratio rules to me are very silly. plenty of people only drink at rocket to venus, just like plenty of people only drank and didn't eat at the atlas bar.

rocket to venus has a huge , lovely, horseshoe shaped bar, and stops serving food after 11 pm. they're open for 68 hours a week , and 23 of those hours the kitchen isn't open. so yeah.

Sorry, there's only 14:

Capt. Larry's
Mt. Royal Tavern

Muggsys is a great bar to go to. It's a little off the beaten path, but worth the detour. Very relaxed atmosphere. I always make new friends everytime I go there!

Nicole wrote "I always make new friends everytime I go there!"

that's what makes a good bar to me. The irony is I've been to 80% of the bars on the board and probabaly never have met any of you. The list Ryan posted- I've been to 99% and is where I can be found on any given day that ends in a y.

Looney's Pub (any of them) best by far
Nach Mammas
Mothers

RODOS BAR
in Fells Point!!!
The best fun in town : )

Really people? Looneys? Erik - Please disregard all who say Looneys is a great bar. In two words - No and Trash. That place is disgusting and full of underclothed 21 yr old girls, bachelor/bachelorette parties, and creepy out of towner old guys. No and no. During the day - maybe, maybe I will have a beer there. But only if my BSSC team forces and bribes me. And even then I will sit outside. Ugh I can smell the jager bombs and desperation from here.

Good call on Brewer's Art though. That's your best bar for sure.

Captain Larry's - awesome bar, thoughtful draft selection (including Rez), fantastic food, terrific specials, and bullet holes in the ceiling.

1919 Fleet St. - a true honky tonk with PBR tall boys and live country music on select night.

Max's - 100+ taps. One of the best beer bars in the US.

Brewer's Art - light and cheerful upstairs, dark and dingy downstairs, and a dining room that you could bring mom & dad to. Fantastic Belgian style beers that they brew and good food as well.

Anyone who says Mahaffeys must not have had the pleasure of dealing with the megalomaniacal, creepy, hitting on all the female customers, booze and gambling addicted prescription-popping moody owner.

Now he's getting a wine bar. Be afraid, ladies, be very afraid. Do not kiss that 51 year old man. You will wake up with creeping crud all over your mouth.

Rodos - 719 S.Broadway in Fells Point,Md. Mike & Tony are the Best!! The entire staff is very friendly,,It's a great atmosphere to hang out with friends, and meet people. The DJ's play a Variety of music, and Keep the dance floor movin"!! They also have many drink specials,,and the shooters are awesome!! You can go every night of the week,,and have a great time partying at RODOS!! Yiamas!!

Griffith's Ice House in Hampden

maybe not the 'best' but you can't find a more 'Baltimore' bar out there

"You will wake up with creeping crud all over your mouth."

@ Easeside

Personally, I think Wayne (Mahaffey's owner) is a pretty good guy. He certainly isn't perfect, and he probably likes his Maker's Mark a bit too much for his own good, but I've never had a bad time from him or his staff the times I've stopped by (and that's pretty often).

On the other hand, based on the comment above, it's pretty clear you know him a great deal better that I do (and for that matter, better than I ever want to get to know him). So I'll defer to your expertise in this matter, and will try not to even speculate how you came about such personalized knowledge.

Maybe I'm one of the many cooks he's fired over the last 4 years. He goes through about one a month. Word to the wise to those working at the new place: keep an updated resume at all times and dont buy that new car just yet.

@JohnM

You don't mean Metro Gallery, do you? They haven't closed for any fires - that I know of.

Metro Gallery is in Station North, a gallery with no food.

Metropolitan is in Federal Hill, with great food and beer and frequently horrible service.

Rodos insiders - we get the idea already, you can stop the spamming already.

Easeside - I have no knowledge of any of what you said, been there maybe once or twice, but geez, way to libel a guy on this forum. I think you oughta grow some balls and use your real name before you do crap like that, and I think the forum oughta just take that down anyway.

@Easeside- That description that you wrote about, could easily describe 25%of the bar owners in general. I am still mad that the TCU field goal kicker couldn't kick that extra point, are you kidding me!

I have never heard anything but great things about Mahaffey's, maybe he has high expectations for his staff. I haven't walked a mile in his shoes.

1- The old Hammerjacks. $10 would get you a red cup that you could fill with anything you wanted on a Thursday night
2-Nevin's. What a place. Only in Baltimore can such a random assortment of people gather
3-Horse You Came In On.
4-Latin Palace. Never has there been such an excellent place to make the evening into a joke.
5-Looney's/ Caladaugh. So trashy but so good. I love when Dundalkians come out to play mixed with the usual crowd of Canton.
6-Max's
7-Mic O Shea s
8-Life of Riely
9-No Idea
10-Riliegh's/ Stalking Horse/ McGirks/ Mad River. All kind of the same bar.
11- Brewer's Art
12-Waterfront Hotel/ Coopers/ Woody's Rum Bar
13-Pickles Pub
14-Field House
15-Little Carl's Fun House (Pigtown) / Razor's (Riverside)/ Jack's Lighthouse
16-XS/ Turps
17-Kislings
18-Swallow at the Hollow/ Craig's
19-The New Porters. John's a good guy.
20-CVP in Charles Village (although the one in Towson is better)
21-The Reserve
22-Dog Pub. Excellent Pizza and very easy to get very drunk.
23-Alexanders in Fells Pt. Always a good time.
24-Quigley's. Definately under rated spot in Ridgely's Delight
25-PJs pub

And Rodos is not a cool bar. I'm sorry. That place makes Fells look disgraceful.

And bring back Preakness with all you can drink.

Anything but Rodos...

Mahaffeys Pub! I work for Wayne and we are all very grateful to work for him! He has made Mahaffeys pub a fun, friendly, and sometimes a bit crazy place to be. I wouldn't even use the word crazy. I like to think of it as entertaining! And so do all the other people that frequent this bar every day! He has worked so hard over the past 10 years to make mahaffeys, his and everyone else that comes in, feel like this is their second home. In a week, we all will have a third home, A third home that Wayne has worked hard to open! He did not just "get" this bar! He worked for it!

So please raise your glass of stoli citrus and lemonade(thats his drink of choice, not makers mark) and lets give a toast to Wayne Mahaffey!

Alice Visilia(I use my real name Easeside)

rodos~~ and to the guy who said "anything but rodos" - kick rocks!

The more I hear about Rodos, the less I wanna go.
I'm allergic to unabashed shill.

I'd rather go to Elliott's Pour House.
Or even Canton Art's & Entertainment.
Maybe even Taps!

Club Charles is still the best

LOONEY'S IS BY FAR THE BEST BAR AROUND! GREAT ATMOSPHERE, DELICIOUS FOOD, WELCOMING SERVICE, AND AWESOME ENTERTAINMENT!!

Hands down Looney's Pub is the best bar around. They always have a drink for me as soon as I walk in the door.

I frequently brave unwanted buttgrabbings to get the $0.25 Everclear cherries as I pass by Rodos, but the cherries are the only reason EVER to go there. Place is seriously gross. Good grassroots effort though, guys.

As far as the question at hand, though, "Best" Bar? ... I dunno; it depends. Gives you lots of great tips on places to check out though, Erik!

0.25 Everclear cherries

NOW WAIT ONE MINUTE!!!

RODOS FOR PRESIDENT!!!

I would have to say Looney's Pub also. They always make me feel welcome and I always meet new friends while I am there..Great staff, awesome food, and you can always watch any game that is being played anywhere on the planet. Give them credit, they were the first bar in Canton before Canton was "Canton"..Back then, highlandtowners wouldn't even say they were from Canton. Now look at it. Now they have spots all around town and are having the same success..I think i'll head there tonight

Couldn't agree more. Also, glad to hear he's moved on from his MM and 7-up days. Stoli citrus and lemonade definitely represents a step up and, hopefully, slows down his intake a bit as well. In any event, regardless of what his current drink of choice is, I've always found Wayne to be a very good guy (and with one of the more phenomenal memories for names that I've ever seen). Cheers!
