Pickled Parrot owner arrested in stabbing
Police arrested George "Gerry" Balog, owner of the Pickled Parrot, in connection with the stabbing of two men Saturday at the intersection of Boston Street and South Linwood Avenue.
According to police, a woman named Christina Horton was walking out of the building at 2901 Boston St. when she saw Balog, Chris Lewis and Joshua Gorrera "rolling on top of each other." All three men had injuries -- Lewis had apparent stab wounds on his back and neck, Gorrera had wounds on his legs and right hand and Balog had a cut on his forehead ...
Balog also had a knife with a three-inch blade in his hand. All three had an "odor of alcohol" on their breath, according to the police report. Lewis and Gorrera were taken to Bayview Hospital, and Balog, a semi-frequent commenter on Midnight Sun, was transported to Johns Hopkins and later to Central Booking.
Police found a pocketknife, cell phone, flip-flop white T-shirt and a pair of underwear -- all with blood on them.

Comments
I hope all are ok and the wounds are not too serious.

Gerry's always been a good guy. I've no details, but can't believe he would have done anything like this without good reason. Self defense?
Hope everything works out for the best.

Don't know Gerry or Tareq nor do I frequent either place, but I think it will be interesting to see how this plays out with all the bruhaha over Tareq's crazy behavior leading to the loss of the liquor license for Sid's.
Also, what's the deal with the underwear mentioned? Was there also a wedgie involved? haha

WILL THIS BAR BE PADLOCKED???? THE OWNER INVOLVED IN A STABBING!!!! WITNESS SAY SHE SMELL BOOZE ON HIM. HE'S ARREST WITH A 3"KNIFE IN HIS POSSESION. THIS CLUB SHOULD BE PADLOCKED AND LIQUOR LICENCE PULLED.

i live at tindeco. walked outside the apartment at 3:30am and saw pool of blood, cell phone, etc. on top of steps / NE entrance to tindeco. curious who (of 3) lived at tindeco, whether they knew each other, WTH happened. regardless, i thought the area was safe and was worried it was a mugging, attempted rape or something. not that this is good news but i'm relieved it wasn't 1 of these. hopefully everyone's ok. can't find any pics of the guy...

This is the same kind of nuisance that forces other bars to lose their liquor licenses and its the owner stabbing folks. Lock the bar up and the owner. Good riddance!

Bloody underwear? Maybe some one approached the bar and tried to push in another guy's "stool" which led to a fight......

Darrell, you have no idea what you're talking about. The Parrot is a fun place with good patrons and always has been. I'd suggest you reserve judgement until you know what really happened. If you've never been there (which I'm sure you haven't), don't bother... Have fun at Chuck E. Cheese... (which is where you probably normally hang out.)

ladies and gents -
This happen at boston and linwood- the PP is on elliot st (blocks away).... the owner probably has the Liq. Lic. in a different persons name. Also the PP jumped the shark along time ago right when Peggy and Barb sold it to the "Mike's" and then they went belly up and the current owner came in. Anyway cannot wait to see how this develops.... the PP can go pound sand.... hahaha

I hope everyone is ok and that this is all a misunderstanding and PP isnt effected in any way! PP is one of my favorite bars in the city and Gerry has always seemed like a nice guy.

Um, Gerry got jumped by two guys and stabbed them. Wouldn't you? Taking on two at a time isn't easy. Self defense kicks in as soon as you get punched, not assault. None of them live at tindeco he was escorting a couple female bar patrons home who DO live there (and yes i know that for a FACT). I would imagine those two idiots were walking up drunk from bay cafe and decided to get in a fight which as we can see turned out being a bad idea. I hope we can get Gerry out of this mess

Not to mention 2 counts of 2nd degree assault , and 2 counts of reckless endangerment.

Was it true that Gerry was shirtless during this incident? I wonder if the shirtless revolution is somehow behind Ger "Bare Chest" Balogs recent downward spiral. I blame it on the fat quiet guy that worked behind the bar. You know, the nerdy one with blond hair. Long Live The Revolution
Posted by: Ray | May 18, 2010 10:12 PM
Michael Clark cocked a loaded shotgun inside of Claddaugh's a while back - does anyone remember that? They didn't lose their liquor license.
This incident didn't happen inside the Parrot, so it has nothing to do with the establishment. Why are so many people jumping on the gun to pull their liquor license? It's ridiculous and shows how terribly narrow minded you poor fools are.
Gerry is a good guy, and would never stab someone for the hell of it. I'm sure if you were assaulted by two guys at once, you'd use a weapon to defend yourself too.
Posted by: J | May 19, 2010 2:36 AM
Looks like a couple of frat boys went barking up the wrong tree, two 21 year old boys gang up on a 40 year old man. Gerry was obviously defending his life. BTW, Bill Mclean, grow up douche-bag. You got kicked out of the Parrot for a reason, get over it!

@Bill- seems like you have an axe to grind with Gerry. I don't think that this is the forum for it especially since you weren't there.
I just hope that everybody is okay and that this will eventually be settled. This incident has nothing to do with the PP. I hope that Gerry is okay and I look forward to hanging out at the PP again sometime soon.

bill Mc states that 1st degree assault means that Gerry started it. nowhere in any definition of 1st degree assault does it say who started it. why is bill Mc allowed to slander Gerry & threaten people on this venue?
Posted by: confused | May 19, 2010 1:37 PM
1st Degree Assault – Assault in the 1st Degree is a Class A Felony and is defined as, with intent to inflict great bodily harm; assaults another with a firearm or any deadly weapon or by any force or means likely to produce great bodily harm or death; or administers, exposes, or transmits to or causes to be taken by another, poison, the human immunodeficiency virus, or any other destructive or noxious substance; or assaults another and inflicts great bodily harm.
Posted by: Anonymous | May 19, 2010 2:10 PM
@confused- I think ya mean libel - and stating ones understanding of 1st degree assault is hardly libel....
Posted by: Anonymous | May 19, 2010 2:14 PM
You can't judge reality by the initial charges. They often through the book at people to crush their spirit and let them know who's the boss.
Posted by: Barrister Pete | May 19, 2010 2:27 PM
Spirit-crushing aside, I think it's also harder to add charges than drop them, so police officers/court commissioners front-load the charges and let the judge/jury decide which category the offense actually falls into after all the evidence is fully examined.

tell me why the man who had the knife walked away with a scratch to his forhead and the other two me were left with OVER 11 stab wounds combine> obviously the two boys did not inflict major harm to this guy. No reason for someone to pull a knife and repeatly stab someone. what is going on now adays!! come on people grow up!!! real men fight with their hands!
Posted by: ??? | May 19, 2010 5:46 PM
??? There are two sides to that story. The reason that Gerry only walked away with a scratch on his forehead is because he had the knife, duh!
And that is the reason the two other kids were left with 11 stab wounds combine. They didn't have a knife.
"real men fight with their hands" Real men also fight one on one. If this was a case of self defense then he had ever right to use a knife he felt that he was in danger. (I think, I am not a lawyer, however I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express)
The courts will decide this case. Remember innocent until proven guilty.

Pretty intersting comments. I've spent more than my fair share of time at the PP. I wasn't on the streets that night, but taking away their liquor license for something that happened blocks from the bar is just stupid. For example: If you work @ TRowe and get into the same fight, do they associate you with TRowe and fire you? Probably not.
Gerry's a local bar owner, call him names, and make your judgements. You weren't with him that night and have non of the facts. We live in a rough town and ... happens. This time to someone people kow.

His is facing first degree assault charges which requires serious physical injury. Stabbing someone will generally meet that requirement.
He's out on bail, so he will likely waive his preliminary hearing and we'll have a trial in 6 months to 2 years.
Sam, can we get some copies of the Statement of Probable Cause?
General Point: Charges cannot be added in Maryland without going to a commissioner/judge, grand jury or criminal information filed by the State's Attorney. So when you make the trip, you always overcharge.

It's not pining, it's passed on. This parrot is no more. It has ceased to be. It's expired and gone to meet its maker. This is a late parrot. It's a stiff. Bereft of life, it rests in peace. If you hadn't nailed it to the perch, it would be pushing up the daisies. It's rung down the curtain and joined the choir invisible. This is an ex-parrot.

My Anonymous brother ... so the issue is making judgments and comments about Gerry ... but doing the same about the two guys stabbed is fair game?
Posted by: Anonymous | May 21, 2010 4:44 PM
@ Andrew B. Saller
Dude I know some people that were in the PP that Saturday night and according to them Gerry was absolutely trashed working behind the bar. I'm not saying he wasn't defending himself because I think he most likely was. And I wish him all the best and hope this gets resolved quickly. But this was most definitely the 12AM Gerry. Probably more like a 2AM version of the 12AM Gerry.
Again I'm definitely on Gerry's side and sure he didn't just go berserk on two random guys for nothing. But there is absolutely no denying that he was drinking heavily that night.
In my opinion though he has to face some sort of serious punishment for using a knife. I'm sure he did think he was fighting for his life but you don't stab people and not face any repercussions unless they have invaded your home.
Posted by: Anon | May 24, 2010 11:35 AM

As a previous employee of Gerry Balogs at the Perry Inn and Pub, I found him to be a very smart, well educated man. He showed loyality to those who worked for him, sometimes to a fault.
Gerry has been known to enjoy a few drinks, but that is part of the restraunt business. I hope it did not affect his judgement.
I hope that he recieves a fair trial. I do not think Gerry would attack someone unprovoked. I hope that alcohol did not have a part in his actions as it often does bring out the worst in people. I hope for a fair decision and wish Mr. Balog the best.
