Pickled Parrot owner arrested in stabbing

Police arrested George "Gerry" Balog, owner of the Pickled Parrot, in connection with the stabbing of two men Saturday at the intersection of Boston Street and South Linwood Avenue.

According to police, a woman named Christina Horton was walking out of the building at 2901 Boston St. when she saw Balog, Chris Lewis and Joshua Gorrera "rolling on top of each other." All three men had injuries -- Lewis had apparent stab wounds on his back and neck, Gorrera had wounds on his legs and right hand and Balog had a cut on his forehead ...
Balog also had a knife with a three-inch blade in his hand. All three had an "odor of alcohol" on their breath, according to the police report. Lewis and Gorrera were taken to Bayview Hospital, and Balog, a semi-frequent commenter on Midnight Sun, was transported to Johns Hopkins and later to Central Booking.

Police found a pocketknife, cell phone, flip-flop white T-shirt and a pair of underwear -- all with blood on them.

I hope all are ok and the wounds are not too serious.

Wasn't Balog a character in the Streetfighter II video game?

Yeah Balog's special attack move in SFII is ↓→← + ST

The parrot was drunk and obnoxious and was celebrating an Orioles loss.

Sounds like a little trouble with the Liquor Board as well as "Baltimore's Finest." I can't wait to hear more on this.

See I told ya what kind of guy he was ....
(reference the best bar in canton article)

Gerry's always been a good guy. I've no details, but can't believe he would have done anything like this without good reason. Self defense?

Hope everything works out for the best.

I don't understand; Balog and Lewis were fighting gonhorrhea?

Don't know Gerry or Tareq nor do I frequent either place, but I think it will be interesting to see how this plays out with all the bruhaha over Tareq's crazy behavior leading to the loss of the liquor license for Sid's.

Also, what's the deal with the underwear mentioned? Was there also a wedgie involved? haha

Is this George "Gerry" Balog the same George Balog who used to be the head of the Baltimore DPW?

UNCLEOLLIE calm yourself.. you have no idea what really happened here. Perhaps you should wait until you lose your mind...

i live at tindeco. walked outside the apartment at 3:30am and saw pool of blood, cell phone, etc. on top of steps / NE entrance to tindeco. curious who (of 3) lived at tindeco, whether they knew each other, WTH happened. regardless, i thought the area was safe and was worried it was a mugging, attempted rape or something. not that this is good news but i'm relieved it wasn't 1 of these. hopefully everyone's ok. can't find any pics of the guy...

This is the same kind of nuisance that forces other bars to lose their liquor licenses and its the owner stabbing folks. Lock the bar up and the owner. Good riddance!

Bloody underwear? Maybe some one approached the bar and tried to push in another guy's "stool" which led to a fight......

Gerry is a good guy, i am going to give him the benefit of the doubt until i hear differently.

I know Gerry and went to the pp often...he is a good guy and people should wait to before judging

Darrell, you have no idea what you're talking about. The Parrot is a fun place with good patrons and always has been. I'd suggest you reserve judgement until you know what really happened. If you've never been there (which I'm sure you haven't), don't bother... Have fun at Chuck E. Cheese... (which is where you probably normally hang out.)

ladies and gents -
This happen at boston and linwood- the PP is on elliot st (blocks away).... the owner probably has the Liq. Lic. in a different persons name. Also the PP jumped the shark along time ago right when Peggy and Barb sold it to the "Mike's" and then they went belly up and the current owner came in. Anyway cannot wait to see how this develops.... the PP can go pound sand.... hahaha

Yes i know Gerry very very well. And obviously all of you don't. He is a piece of work.

Street Fighter references are always funny

Why is this stabbing not showing up on any other news media outlets or crime blotters. Is there a backstory that is not being released yet?

I hope everyone is ok and that this is all a misunderstanding and PP isnt effected in any way! PP is one of my favorite bars in the city and Gerry has always seemed like a nice guy.

I'm with Kateebee. East side vs. West side battle royale. Two liquor licenses enter, one shall leave...

Christ I hope PP doesn't close. Whatever happens to Gerry is immaterial, I just don't want to have to change my Elliott Street allegiance to Jack's Bistro.

*throws energy ball

The Street Fighter character is Balrog, not Balog.

And if you don't know, now you know...

Um, Gerry got jumped by two guys and stabbed them. Wouldn't you? Taking on two at a time isn't easy. Self defense kicks in as soon as you get punched, not assault. None of them live at tindeco he was escorting a couple female bar patrons home who DO live there (and yes i know that for a FACT). I would imagine those two idiots were walking up drunk from bay cafe and decided to get in a fight which as we can see turned out being a bad idea. I hope we can get Gerry out of this mess

NYP Headline:
Police Pick-up Pickled Parrot Proprietor for Puncturing Peer; Public Panic

Wasn't Balog a character in "Raiders of the Lost Ark" who was always one sinister step ahead of Indy and whose head exploded?

was there a limo and a linebacker involved?

Balog? Oh, so close close to the Star Trek character Balok. Perhaps they drank too much tranya.

you don't get charged with 2 counts of 1st degree assault when it is self defense.
Not to mention 2 counts of 2nd degree assault , and 2 counts of reckless endangerment.

please hold your judgement. i don't even know what happened or the situation but there may be an explanation. if the tables were turned YOU may not like to hear the things that are being said here. Talking about shutting down the establishment / liquor licensed revoked. hold judgement til we hear the facts.

Was it true that Gerry was shirtless during this incident? I wonder if the shirtless revolution is somehow behind Ger "Bare Chest" Balogs recent downward spiral. I blame it on the fat quiet guy that worked behind the bar. You know, the nerdy one with blond hair. Long Live The Revolution

Michael Clark cocked a loaded shotgun inside of Claddaugh's a while back - does anyone remember that? They didn't lose their liquor license.

This incident didn't happen inside the Parrot, so it has nothing to do with the establishment. Why are so many people jumping on the gun to pull their liquor license? It's ridiculous and shows how terribly narrow minded you poor fools are.

Gerry is a good guy, and would never stab someone for the hell of it. I'm sure if you were assaulted by two guys at once, you'd use a weapon to defend yourself too.

Looks like a couple of frat boys went barking up the wrong tree, two 21 year old boys gang up on a 40 year old man. Gerry was obviously defending his life. BTW, Bill Mclean, grow up douche-bag. You got kicked out of the Parrot for a reason, get over it!

Shirtless? Uh oh, ever seen COPS? Shirtless is always bad

@tim-may-find-you - ...1st degree assault means that he started the fight. Let me know if ya want to tell me who you are, big man. Oh wait or are ya going to pull a blade on me like you BFF.

Now, now, ladies. You are BOTH pretty.

This article is too vague to even make judgement

This article is too vague to even make judgement

That's what judges are for.

But he started it first...

We all weren't there so nobody knows what happened. I have met Gerry a few times and he has always been a great guy to me.

@Bill- seems like you have an axe to grind with Gerry. I don't think that this is the forum for it especially since you weren't there.

I just hope that everybody is okay and that this will eventually be settled. This incident has nothing to do with the PP. I hope that Gerry is okay and I look forward to hanging out at the PP again sometime soon.

People need to wait to find out what happened before they run off at the keyboard about things they have NO idea about..Makes you sound REALLY dumb...what if it were you..

I think this is exactly the forum for comments about this guy, good and bad. Innocent until proven guilty, but he was charged, and that says something. Does anyone know the 2 guys that got stabbed?I mean besides the guesses that they were frat boys coming from the bay cafe.

Not looking good.

bill Mc states that 1st degree assault means that Gerry started it. nowhere in any definition of 1st degree assault does it say who started it. why is bill Mc allowed to slander Gerry & threaten people on this venue?

1st Degree Assault – Assault in the 1st Degree is a Class A Felony and is defined as, with intent to inflict great bodily harm; assaults another with a firearm or any deadly weapon or by any force or means likely to produce great bodily harm or death; or administers, exposes, or transmits to or causes to be taken by another, poison, the human immunodeficiency virus, or any other destructive or noxious substance; or assaults another and inflicts great bodily harm.

@confused- I think ya mean libel - and stating ones understanding of 1st degree assault is hardly libel....

You can't judge reality by the initial charges. They often through the book at people to crush their spirit and let them know who's the boss.

Spirit-crushing aside, I think it's also harder to add charges than drop them, so police officers/court commissioners front-load the charges and let the judge/jury decide which category the offense actually falls into after all the evidence is fully examined.

ooh, i've got jury duty tomorrow...

tell me why the man who had the knife walked away with a scratch to his forhead and the other two me were left with OVER 11 stab wounds combine> obviously the two boys did not inflict major harm to this guy. No reason for someone to pull a knife and repeatly stab someone. what is going on now adays!! come on people grow up!!! real men fight with their hands!

??? There are two sides to that story. The reason that Gerry only walked away with a scratch on his forehead is because he had the knife, duh!

And that is the reason the two other kids were left with 11 stab wounds combine. They didn't have a knife.

"real men fight with their hands" Real men also fight one on one. If this was a case of self defense then he had ever right to use a knife he felt that he was in danger. (I think, I am not a lawyer, however I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express)

The courts will decide this case. Remember innocent until proven guilty.

tell me why the man who had the knife walked away with a scratch to his forhead

Because he had the knife?

Pretty intersting comments. I've spent more than my fair share of time at the PP. I wasn't on the streets that night, but taking away their liquor license for something that happened blocks from the bar is just stupid. For example: If you work @ TRowe and get into the same fight, do they associate you with TRowe and fire you? Probably not.

Gerry's a local bar owner, call him names, and make your judgements. You weren't with him that night and have non of the facts. We live in a rough town and ... happens. This time to someone people kow.

Well top notch reporting and no follow-ups. I have been friends with Gerry since High School and to think that this is anything other than self-defense is out of character for him. He does not go looking for trouble.

"a scratch to his forhead"?

Silly me, but I don't consider needing 11 stitches to be a "scratch".

@ChrisB -- Follow up? The dude just got arrested. I don't know what you expect me to do -- camp out at his door and surprise interview him?

@ChrisB -- Follow up? The dude just got arrested. I don't know what you expect me to do -- camp out at his door and surprise interview him?

That's exactly what you should do! Be sure to where a fedora!

what you expect me to do -- camp out at his door and surprise interview him?

Do it! Camp out on his doorstep 60 Minutes style with a bloody handkerchief. IS THIS BLOOD? SIR!? IS. THIS. YOUR. BLOOD!?!?

BAM! Gotcha.

Sam works for the Baltimore Sun not the Daily Planet. But if you could I would want you to camp out at Tareq's house, have dinner at Milan and drinks at the Pickled Parrot and then go back to your house in South Baltimore and report how long it takes you to find parking;). You can do it!

@Anon -- If I did all that, Midnight Sun would implode. It's like saying 'Beetlejuice' three times.

Would Chris Sligh be there?

Who's Chris Sligh?

I love this blog.

I knew EXACTLY what I was getting into by clicking that link, but I still was taken aback by the sight of 20 mini-Chris Sligh's staring me in the face, haha.

I got Sligh'ed. And yes, I think we should make that the new Rick Roll'ed.

Chris Sligh's Wikipedia is pretty interesting. For example, he went to Bob Jones University.

I'm totally going to be Slighing people in midnight sun posts. Get ready, gang.

I my opinion there is a big difference between the Gerry at 6pm and the gerry at 12 midnight, if you take my meaning. I Guess this was the 12 midnight version.

His is facing first degree assault charges which requires serious physical injury. Stabbing someone will generally meet that requirement.

He's out on bail, so he will likely waive his preliminary hearing and we'll have a trial in 6 months to 2 years.

Sam, can we get some copies of the Statement of Probable Cause?

General Point: Charges cannot be added in Maryland without going to a commissioner/judge, grand jury or criminal information filed by the State's Attorney. So when you make the trip, you always overcharge.

A source close to Gerry & the PP states that, in this case, this was not the "other" Gerry that some people have referred to. Evidently, these guys screwed w/ the wrong guy on the wrong night. Sure, Gerry has stirred up some S**t from time-to-time. That said, I've never known him to EVER back down when F****d with. Kinda like the "Get off my lawn" line from Gran Torino.

Boycott the Parrot!

20 plus years in the business, Gerry has never pulled a knife when confronted. I will believe he thought his life was in danger. I will believe the hard working tax payer! what do those thugs do for a living?

It's not pining, it's passed on. This parrot is no more. It has ceased to be. It's expired and gone to meet its maker. This is a late parrot. It's a stiff. Bereft of life, it rests in peace. If you hadn't nailed it to the perch, it would be pushing up the daisies. It's rung down the curtain and joined the choir invisible. This is an ex-parrot.

yeah a real bad ass.... ha.... easy to not back down when ya are going to stab people, and this was nothing like the line from GT.

It's really bad ass to post misinformation, lies and incorrect facts... anonymously.

Who in the hell do some of you people think you are pre-judging, making uninformed comments about, and posting Facebook photos showing a guy who may have gotten genuinely accosted by a couple of guys that wanted to pick a fight?
If you want to use Facebook to snoop around for information (and be smart about it), search for Josh Gorrera or Chris Lewis. FYI, there is a Josh Gorrera who is friends with a Chris Lewis, both of whom are origianlly from MD, and both of whom were in MD that weekend according to their posts. They were in the same fraternity at JMU and it appears that they are both a little 'meathead-ish'. I REALLY doubt Gerry started it in the first place. Just smarten up, people...

did that ya yahoo - 1st josh locks his page so you lie.... second chris stated that he was in bmore on friday and dc on sat.
ie - here is josh's page

if this is even them....
now you smarten up smarty -

My Anonymous brother ... so the issue is making judgments and comments about Gerry ... but doing the same about the two guys stabbed is fair game?

@ Andrew B. Saller

Dude I know some people that were in the PP that Saturday night and according to them Gerry was absolutely trashed working behind the bar. I'm not saying he wasn't defending himself because I think he most likely was. And I wish him all the best and hope this gets resolved quickly. But this was most definitely the 12AM Gerry. Probably more like a 2AM version of the 12AM Gerry.

Again I'm definitely on Gerry's side and sure he didn't just go berserk on two random guys for nothing. But there is absolutely no denying that he was drinking heavily that night.

In my opinion though he has to face some sort of serious punishment for using a knife. I'm sure he did think he was fighting for his life but you don't stab people and not face any repercussions unless they have invaded your home.

The incident did not occur at the bar. Should thet pull his liquor licence? His drivers license? His marriage license? His fishing license?

As a previous employee of Gerry Balogs at the Perry Inn and Pub, I found him to be a very smart, well educated man. He showed loyality to those who worked for him, sometimes to a fault.
Gerry has been known to enjoy a few drinks, but that is part of the restraunt business. I hope it did not affect his judgement.
I hope that he recieves a fair trial. I do not think Gerry would attack someone unprovoked. I hope that alcohol did not have a part in his actions as it often does bring out the worst in people. I hope for a fair decision and wish Mr. Balog the best.

pgp--The Gerry Balog you speak of is this guy's Dad.

PP rocks. I hope he feels better and gets past this.

Apparently it's Not Guilty! I can't wait to read all about it. What do you say Sam? Erik? Anyone?

Not Guilty!!! Woohoo!!!

not to worry everyone. As Everyone who is anyone know that Gerry dad is the WORLD renound, ULTRA-UBER famous high powered attorney. George Balog, aka Mr.Bumbles, aka The GGB, aka, George G Poopy-pants. if anyone can free Geryy he can do it. look, listen gerry is a very cool fellow. i sure he had a very good reasone for stabing these guys. as we all know Gerry like to occationaly partake in some recreational smokeing of the Crack-Cocaine aka The Ready Rock, aka The Zackee special or as gerry calls it, breakfast. so what i'm saying here people is that when you tell gerry your gonna give hime a piece of crack to smoke, you'd better not be pulling on his beard, or he'll stab you.

Bumble Out...........

@ Mike ray - comedy - hey i just heard from someone that he just got evicted.... anyone know if this is true?

just in - I have heard through the grapevine that the building owner has evicted someone.....
