Teen Night at Bourbon Street

bourbon street baltimoreYesterday, Terrell Thompson, a 10th grader at the Baltimore Freedom Academy, shadowed me for a few hours. He casually mentioned how he goes to teen nights at Bourbon Street. I asked him to write something about it, and he did.

UPDATE: The last teen night was last year, according to club owner James Temple and manager Sam Chaney. They're contemplating bringing it back again this summer.

Here is Terrell's account:

Bourbon Street's Teen Night is the hottest teen night in the city. The night is for teens 14 and older and is just $15, and trust me, it's worth it.

There is a lot of diversity of races that come to this club and have fun. The speakers are blasting songs from the hottest artists from Katy Perry to Lil Wayne. The club has parties from the inside to the roof (how cool is that?) ...

There aren’t many things for teens to do on the weekends and the movies are getting boring so what is the best thing to do party at Bourbon Street Teen Night? This is a teen party so no alcohol just soda or water.

Some nights they even have pajama parties and also butt shaking contests. One problem I have with teen night is, it's only from 7:00 to 11:30 and it just needs to be longer.

I don't think "butt shaking contests" are appropriate for 14 year olds. I hope I don't sound like an old man saying that. At least I didn't yell,"Get off my lawn."

uh.... Anyone else a little disturbed by this:

Some nights they even have pajama parties and also butt shaking contests.

Something tells me this post may get more than a few comments.

It may also lead to a rise in fake IDs that show you're still in your teens.

...songs from the hottest artist from Katie Perry to Lil Wayne

I hope that is a copy error and not his original lack of plural...

Go easy on the kid, CalicoGal, he was writing on deadline for the first time!

I was only mildly disturbed by the butt shaking contests. I was highly disturbed that the cover for teens is $15. That's a lot of money for me, and I have a real job.

I guess you gotta pay first prize in the butt shaking contest somehow.

Also, I didn't know you could shadow Sam Sessa. I want to do that bad. and by shadow, I mean 'daytime barhopping on an expense account."

Wait for Sam to shadow Terrell at Teen Night.

For living right next to Bourbon Street, I'm sure glad that Teen Night only goes to 11:30pm!

Ill second,, "Uh, Butt Shaking COntests? at 15? WHaaaaAAA???"

would a hula hoop contest really be all that more wholesome than a butt shaking contest?

Wow. Butt shaking contests for children. There is absolutely nothing disturbing about that. All the adults in the room for these parties should probably just check themselves into jail now.

Hey, hey, we all had our "shocking behavior" at 15. I don't approve, but guess what, i'm not 15 anymore. My friends' kids of that age are locked down with their bands in the garage, working on the latest HORRENDOUS ( still love you, just practice more) version of "stairway to heaven", so at least these youngsters are getting out in the night air.
15 bucks is pretty steep, I won't pay that for cover unless it's a favorite band, national act, or both. Then again, i'm pathologically cheap.

$15 makes sense since they can't make any dough on liquor sales. Butt shaking beats crack smoking.

As for pajama parties, I am told that teens (did I just use that word in a non-ironic way?) wear pajamas to school and the mall. etc. If I had my way I would be ensconced in velvet pyjamas every day, like Sheik Yerbouti.

Pyjamarama!

Hey Sam
just wanted you to know that we don't have a Teen Night at Bourbon St. We haven't had one since June (I think) of 09. Teen Nights are generally something we would do over the summer and have not made any decissions on doing any this year. Also I know we have had beach themes and white parties but no pajama parties and the dance contests have been kids that have dance groups not the "booty shakin" image that people seem to have.
Please call or email me if you would like to discuss this further.

Butt shaking beats crack smoking

No doubt, but that's a false dilemma. There's plenty that they could be doing besides those 2 options.

As for wearing pajamas to school, I'm going to venture a guess here: the PJ's they're wearing to school are a bit different than those that they're wearing to the club.

Hey, hey, we all had our "shocking behavior" at 15. I don't approve, but guess what, i'm not 15 anymore.

I'm not trying to be holier than thou and I'm no better than any other reformed debaucherous youth, but at some point you have to call shenanigans.

Children's butt shaking contests = shenanigans

"Also, I didn't know you could shadow Sam Sessa. I want to do that bad. and by shadow, I mean 'daytime barhopping on an expense account."

Puuuuuhlease. i shadow that guy all the time. he can't even pee anymore without a fear of me lurking in the trashcans in hiding.

but seriously, that was a pretty good write up! great job, Terrell!

I would just like to point out that only OMG could work a Zappa reference into an article about a teen night.

Go Terrell!

Go Sam for giving Terrell the opportunity to shadow you!

I'll show Terrell this post and all of the comments tomorrow, I'm curious to see his reaction.
