As per your votes, Federal Hill's best neighborhood bar is ...

captain larry'sCaptain Larry's (601 E. Fort Ave.)!

Ivars and the gang beat out a bunch of other South Baltimore bars to win the Midnight Sun Commenters' Choice Award for Federal Hill's Best Neighborhood Bar.

People seemed to gloss over (or dispute) my description of the physical boundaries of Federal Hill as defined by this contest.

To them, I say: Pbth.

Here are the runner-ups ...

Second place: Mum's (1132 S. Hanover St.). It was nice to see a shout out to Sinclair.

Third place is a tie between Muggsy's Mug House (1236 Light St.) and Pub Dog (20 E. Cross St.).

People made some good points about Idle Hour not having a neighborhood bar feel. But I'm not changing my vote again. I'm sticking by it this time.

The next Commenter's Choice award will be announced soon. I'm going to drop them like bombs all month. So get ready.

Captain Larry's? Really?

I've wanted to like it, but I haven't had a good experience all 3 times I've been.

I find the bartender there, Wolf, to give terrible service and I really prefer my bar stools to not have ripped up seat cushions, even in a dive bar. Come on fellas, get the stools fixed so I dont have to worry about ruining my clothes.

I love me some Larry's-- frosty beers, tasty crab cakes. But I sure miss that cutie patootie Abby who used to tend bar once in awhile.

Congratulations Ivars! Good job!

Captain Larry's is the most interesting bar in Baltimore. I don't go to Baltimore often, but when I do - I go to Captain Larry's.

I see in the photo that the usual attendance of 4 patrons is holding up strong.

Always great Ivars!!

That photo has gotta be from the Tim Whistead Days. Mark is pouring the drinks while Chris W. is sitting with his femme de jour.

Captain Larry's of Federal Hill...~katahara itai~

i can't WAIT for the locust point commenter's choice. can we expect that after edmondson village or brooklyn?

As a Fed Hill resident, er, south bmore I guess, Captain Larry's is great. Not sure if it's a favorite, but it gives our neighborhood the charm Baltimore is all about. Cheers! Sam, maybe you could start a thread about what makes bmore charm city. I think it's hard to put your finger on.

Edmondson Village - toss up between Iampieri's Westway Lounge, Jennings in Catonsville or someplace in Ellicott City.

Good job Mara and Ivars!

About Sam Sessa
I've been The Baltimore Sun's nightlife and local entertainment reporter for a couple years, and it's surprising how much the scene has grown in that time. Most of Baltimore's bars and clubs are unpretentious places with fairly cheap drinks and plenty of character. I like dancing and think this city needs more clubs, but nothing beats having a cold, locally brewed beer with friends in a comfortably full corner bar.
