Sneak peek: the new Looney's South

looney's south columbiaUnder the Admiral's Cup/Pub Dog post, I remember someone asking how many locations it takes to make a chain. As far as I'm concerned, three is the magic number.

That means Looney's Pub is now officially a local chain. Congrats, guys!

Looney's South was scheduled to open in Columbia today (I'm waiting for a call back to see if it will indeed open on time). But in the meantime, I have a few Top Secret Sneak Peek photos to share with you.

All of these photos are courtesy of Midnight Sun reader MK. Thanks, MK!

MK also submitted some captions for the photos. Here is the caption for this one: just ONE of the bars with ONE of the banks of TV's -- this one has a RAW BAR

But wait, there's more ...

they were checking the height of the large screen that will broadcast the band playing at the other end of the bar. Under that screen? They plan to have a kids' area with a few Wii's to let the kids play!!!!!

This place is HUGE. This was a week ago -- the contractors have been working very hard to finish. I can't wait to see the finished product because even then was AMAZING. This one is just phenomenal!!!!!

I thought you had to be a resident of the county you have your business in to hold a liquor license? Isn't Columbia in a different county? Look at Patricks of Pratt, they have two locations and I know for a fact you have to be a Frederick county resident to hold a license. You have to put the address on your license on the liquor application, so no P.O. Box hijinx there. I thought it was the same in Baltimore. Or is this one of those "my grand mother is an officer in Company and her name is on the license type thing." I'm not hating on anyone, just would like to be enlightened.

Congratulations to the new Looney's location. I've been in, an its awesome.

Need to be enlightened, get a life!

Good things happen to good people, and good people drink good beer!

Congratulations Bill and Steve!

I still say their next branch should be called Looney's Bin

On the subject of HDTVs:

Am I the only one one peeved when HDTVs are playing the standard def channel? Or when they're on the HD channel, but they're not hooked up properly so the signal is essentially standard def (see half the screens at Looney's Canton). Maybe I'm nitpicking, but when I go to a sports bar to catch a game with some friends, especially one with a massive amount of HDTVs, I'd at least like the game to look as good as it does on my set at home. This seems to happen in at least half of the sport bars I go to in town.

Anyone else notice this, or am I just a nitpicking whiner?

Sam - any update as to whether Looney's South opened yesterday?

We visited the new Looney's Sunday evening, and lets just say, it didn't go well. Hoping they'll get the service improved, as the facility is awesome.

I drove by Looney's South on St. Patty's Day with the intention of checking the place out. The line to get inside was literally out the door and down a couple blocks. It was insane! So I guess they had a grand welcome.

This is one of the worst restauants to ever work at i worked at the one in bel air and the manager from the columbia store came down. he thought he knew what he was doing and decided to fire about 5 of the cooks. one of which kinda walked out. ... the workers at two of the locations now are all unorganized and really have little kitchen expierence. many people have been complaining about it and the food keeps going down hill. there also many problems within the employees from stealing to fights and other things. there is currently one out of 11 cooks that actually went to cullinary school in in the last year there were 5 so now a bunch of part time empoyees are making up new specials, doing prep work, and cooking your meals. enjoy to all!!!

About Sam Sessa
I've been The Baltimore Sun's nightlife and local entertainment reporter for a couple years, and it's surprising how much the scene has grown in that time. Most of Baltimore's bars and clubs are unpretentious places with fairly cheap drinks and plenty of character. I like dancing and think this city needs more clubs, but nothing beats having a cold, locally brewed beer with friends in a comfortably full corner bar.
