A look at the new Billabong Bar

billabong bar baltimoreYou've read the review.

Now, see the new Billabong Bar for yourself, high-definition digital cell phone camera style. Oh yeah, baby.

Look at that dark, mysterious coat of paint. Witness the rugged wood sign proclaiming to all the presence of Federal Hill's new Australian-themed pub.

Here it is, ladies and gentlemen. Here is ... Billabong.

Can't you hear can't you hear the thunder? You better run, you better take cover.

drink till you chunder, mates!

Billabong? That's an odd name. I would have called it Chazzwazzers.

i wonder if their toilets flush counter-clockwise?

I would DEF go to a bar with an awesome name like Chazzwazzers, haha. "I'm headin' to the Chazz"...

Will probably check out Billabong anyway; it looks fun!

Sorry I'm off topic here, but I just saw the article by a B'more Sun staffer (you?) about next month's North Avenue Spring Music Festival. Spill it for the MS devout, Sessa.

bryaninbrisbane, any relation to your North B'more mate bryanintimonium (creator of the yet-to-be-opened Ful)?
Are you showing up at the MS shindig this Thurs? Hope so.

I don't know, Bryan. I think Billabong is a perfectly cromulent name.

Yes, Courtney - he will be there.

And BA, I was trying to embiggen everyone's vocabulary.

Please tell me they serve vagamite sandwiches???

If by vegemite you mean peanuts, then yes.
Also, I believe vagamite is something else entirely.

This that what it really looks like?
What a throughly anonymous looking establishment, zero curb appeal if don't hold the color choice against it. It does as effective job at being as inconspicuous as possible as I imagine a speakeasy in the Twenty's must of been. You could drive by it and miss it.

As an Australian-themed pub? A well kept secret that you wouldn't discover from the street.

I went in last night- a great stop in Fed Hill. Not too crowded, not too young, and really cheap. Go prepared though, they don't take credit cards. Hope this remains, as GDA put it, a "well kept secret" from the Cross St mayhem!

About Sam Sessa
I've been The Baltimore Sun's nightlife and local entertainment reporter for a couple years, and it's surprising how much the scene has grown in that time. Most of Baltimore's bars and clubs are unpretentious places with fairly cheap drinks and plenty of character. I like dancing and think this city needs more clubs, but nothing beats having a cold, locally brewed beer with friends in a comfortably full corner bar.
