Max's swamped for annual Belgian Fest
The party is on at Max's Taphouse, 737 S. Broadway.
Midnight Sunner/Nightcrawler columnist Jmgiordano is over there right now, and just called with a morning report.
The doors opened to the public at 11 a.m., and already the place is swamped, he said.
"It is mobbed," he said. "We started drinking at 10 a.m. for the Nightcrawler tasting. [begin gratuitous plug about the bar owner] Ron Furman is a wonderful host. He's a great man. [end gratuitous plug about the bar owner] Yeah but it's mobbed. They opened the door and it was like a floodgate." ...
Then he passed the cell phone to Furman himself, who was standing nearby.
"The building is almost filled already," Furman said. "Casey [Hard] outdid himself this year. The man is doing great."

It was definitely packed. Got there right at 11 and did not expect such a large crowd waiting outside. I had 2 glasses (and some waffles) and bounced.
But I did have...
Hanssens Oude Kriek (Cask) (Cherry) Lambic -Fruit Hanssens Artisanaal bvba
Alvinne Extra India Pale Ale Belgian IPA 7.0 Picobrouwerij Alvinne
I enjoyed them both. I might try again tomorrow.

I just got back to my hotel room (yeah that's right) and while it was crowded, it was easy enough to get some of the most unusual beers I've ever had. I'm actually going back later to try out some more.
So far I tried:
Duvel Green
Ommegang Rouge
Some sort of Winterbok
Cantillon Saint Lamvinus
Scaldis Prestige (do not recommend)
Some sort of mustard ale
and a few others.
The varieties all poured out in sample glasses makes the place look like liquid autumn. It's awesome.
