What's up with Flip's?
Got an email the other day from MS reader Neal.
He writes:
Any idea what's up with Flip's on Union Avenue in Hampden (by the Pepsi plant)?
It's had a sign on the door since mid-December that says it's closed for the "holidays". As of yesterday (Jan. 9), though, it hasn't reopened.
I've seen people in there watching TV once or twice, so I figure the owner isn't out of town. It looks to me like it might be done for good.
If it is closed, that's a shame but you could have guessed it. It's actually a nice place but it seems like it never found an identity.

Hmm. Anybody know anything?

I've been The Baltimore Sun's nightlife and local entertainment reporter for a couple years, and it's surprising how much the scene has grown in that time. Most of Baltimore's bars and clubs are unpretentious places with fairly cheap drinks and plenty of character. I like dancing and think this city needs more clubs, but nothing beats having a cold, locally brewed beer with friends in a comfortably full corner bar.

Rumor has it that they didn't pay the gas bill which = no hot water, on top of health code violations that left them amongst others (Fraziers, Dogwood Deli) closed for a few days. Though the other places are open Flip's isn't.

The joint is still closed. Just about a month now, which tells me it's done for good.
Seems to me that somebody could do well in that space if it becomes available. The location isn't great but it's not terrible either. A spot with the right identity could probably find a regular crowd.
