2008's best bar openings and closings?

I'm thinking about doing a nightlife column on this year's best bar openings and closings. I might even split it into a couple different categories. I might do best revamp, best new drink, etc.

Got any suggestions for best new bar? How about the bar you miss the most?

I've been to Bourbon Street twice and I have to say I really enjoy drinking for free on Ladies Night. (I mean, who wouldn't like that?) The music and the crowd are pretty decent for the most part, too.

Howl at the Moon hasn't closed, but with all of the recent departures, it has become a shell of its former self.

I miss charlotte's for mostly selfish reasons, but also because it had decent live music pretty much all the time and very friendly staff. *single tear*

I work at.... I mean... been to Bourbon Street too. The drink prices are reasonable and had a great time hanging out with my buds and just chillin'

Bar I miss the most... Lulu's.

I think the Hudson Street Stackhouse is probably my favorite bar to open this year. If adding a bar to an existing place counts as a 2008 opening, I also like the Metro Gallery.

On the closing side of things, I wasn't too heartbroken to see Tiburzi's shutdown... twice.

Bar Closings in Federal Hill/ South Baltimore:

Charlotte's, Federal Hill Lounge (maybe), Sky Lounge

Bar Openings in Federal Hill/ South Baltimore:

Taps, Muggsy's, The Abbey

About Sam Sessa
I've been The Baltimore Sun's nightlife and local entertainment reporter for a couple years, and it's surprising how much the scene has grown in that time. Most of Baltimore's bars and clubs are unpretentious places with fairly cheap drinks and plenty of character. I like dancing and think this city needs more clubs, but nothing beats having a cold, locally brewed beer with friends in a comfortably full corner bar.
