Sam - Am I correct in assuming that you mean establishments that are bars and clubs only, sans food service? If I am wrong, please clarify. Thanks!

Is Gampy's still around? That place was always pretty funny, being served gator tails by a drag queen.

Evan - GAMPY's unceremoniously closed many years ago. One moment it was open, the next it was not. If my memory serves me correctly, it happened around Thanksgiving almost a decade ago. The building has been undergoing rehab for several months now ... possibly as residential units. (Apologies if I have incorrect information; I'll do some research.)

Evan - I found the following two articles, one about the business side and one from the memory side ...

Then, for comic relief, check this advert out for the Entertainment coupon book ... click on the GAMPY link for a grand chuckle. Makes you wanna purchase one of the books, eh?

Does Crossroads Bar and Restaurant count?
Kupkake!

Yikes, ten years ago. I guess it makes sense sorta, the last time I was there was in high schoolish.
I'm gonna put Rowan Tree out there because it's the only one in its surrounding area (to my knowledge), it's got a decent interior, a smoking deck/lounge outside for patrons, and it's the only one I've ever been in.

Rowan Tree but more so when it had Mr. Johnny Mauro. No place was more fun.
Posted by: jason | June 10, 2008 3:59 PM
I worked at the Rowan Tree for awhile about two years ago years and I loved it. But I haven't been back since Big Johnny "Rock out with your [fowl expletive] Out" Mauro moved to NYC. I've heard that its become less gay and more South Baltimore. Like Razors down the block.

I am shocked that no one has mentioned Grand Central or Hippo or Coconuts or Port in a Storm.

Regarding the Gampy's listing.
In theory the listing should have been deleted at least a year ago but it's continued existence isn't that surprising. Locally a restuarant wasn't only closed for three and half years, but was torn down and a new building for a bank was almost complete when some bright bulb decided to shutdown the website.
Apparently they didn't want to appear hasty or optimism about re-opening died hard.
It seems this crowd isn't among the regular patrons of any of the alternative lifestyle waterig holes and eateries to make this a truly interesting exchange of information.

Long Live JOHNNY MAURO!!!!
Queen is right in the respect that Rowan Tree deserves top honors with an asterik for Mr. Mauro.

I LOVE the expletive! For real!
Posted by: colleen_baltimore | June 11, 2008 2:44 AM
Sam - GC and Hippo are identified as gay bars, so of course they're gay-friendly. I think we all assumed you meant bars/clubs that are not identified as gay but as str8 and yet are gay-friendly, such as the Red Maple or that place at Power Plant Live that "turns" gay one night a week. You should define your parameters more clearly

Actually I would have mentioned coconuts, but I've never been there and only know about it due to its historic value (dad's old after work bar in the kavanaugh's days, the wire, blah blah blah)
also colleen what is a fowl expletive? Is that like a duck/chicken sexual position? or was that a mod edit......

Colleen loves the "______" a-doodle-doo. Like most women that don't go to Coconuts.
Posted by: jason | June 11, 2008 10:29 PM
ha! I did get myself in trouble with this one. What I meant to say was that I loved Sam's usage of the word "expletive" to replace what I had originally wrote. I wasn't trying to declare my love for the love for the "_____". :) I can see where their might be some confusion. That's what I get for submitting comments at 2:44 am after work and many shots. Although my mistake did make me laugh.
