The Montford

I had a beer at a recently renovated corner bar called The Montford last week.

At least, that's what the bartender said it was called. I've also seen it called The Montford Stag Bar, which I like better than just the plain old Montford. ...

There's not much to The Montford, actually.

It's a single story, narrow rowhouse bar with a pool table in back. The bar itself was redone as part of the renovations, although the bar back is the same, the bartender said.

A few decent beers were on tap. I had a Sierra Nevada, which was $4, give or take.

Across the street is one of the better places in town to get carryout crabs (Chris' Seafood).

The scrappy regulars are what really would draw one to the location. The bland interior opens up to some interesting conversations.
Second the Chris' recommendation.

I've been The Baltimore Sun's nightlife and local entertainment reporter for a couple years, and it's surprising how much the scene has grown in that time. Most of Baltimore's bars and clubs are unpretentious places with fairly cheap drinks and plenty of character. I like dancing and think this city needs more clubs, but nothing beats having a cold, locally brewed beer with friends in a comfortably full corner bar.
