I'm off to Non-Comm

For the next few days, I'll be live blogging from the Non-Commventon up in Philly.

What's Non-Comm, you say? Funny you should ask.

Every year, folks from triple-a radio stations like WTMD and WXPN get together with industry types to talk about emerging artists.

There are live showcases, interviews and meet and greets.

Here are some posts from last year's convention.

This year, I'll be seeing some performances from people like Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Jakob Dylan (pictured), The Watson Twins and a dozen more.

Of course, I'll also keep doing normal nightlife stuff like Fab Five Friday.

Are you ready? I know I am. Bring it on!

Sam,

Just make sure you see Back Door Slam. They are incredible live. Get in the front row to see Davy Knowles guitar wizardry and facial expressions. Have fun!!

Sam, enjoy the Comm!! There is always great bands up there every year (Coldplay, Barenaked Ladies, etc) That's a good line-up this year too. I've been a Wallflowers fan since the beginning. Sharon Jones is a real talent. Looking forward to seeing her at V-fest.

Sam,
I saw a great show last night @ the 8 by 10. Old Man Brown opened up for Dumpstafunk- which includes Ivan and Ian Neville- the next generation of musicians from that famous New Orleans music family.

Both bands had a funk sound to them and were well matched in playing together. Keep an eye out for Old Man Brown playing around here locally, and definitely catch Dumpstafunk next time they are in town!

Don't miss Alejandro Escovedo. His new single is Little Steven's "Coolest song in the world" this week!!

jakob dylan's mellower, almost-country sound, is sure to be a crowd-pleaser. have fun . . . looking forward to your blogs!

Mather, Old Man Brown was actually my first guest on Baltimore Unsigned back in the fall of 06. You're right -- they're great players.

Jakob, in the above photo, looks much like father Bob Dylan circa 1968

he does. i think it's the hat.

About the blogger
I've been The Baltimore Sun's nightlife and local entertainment reporter for a couple years, and it's surprising how much the scene has grown in that time. Most of Baltimore's bars and clubs are unpretentious places with fairly cheap drinks and plenty of character. I like dancing and think this city needs more clubs, but nothing beats having a cold, locally brewed beer with friends in a comfortably full corner bar.
