Cinco de Mayo: Like Preakness

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

For millions of Mexicans and Mexican-Americans, today is a celebration of Mexico's history stemming from a 1862 military victory over France.

For Americans, today is a reason to drink tequila, South American beer and frozen drinks.

I'll bet most Americans don't even know (or care about) the holiday's history.

It's like Preakness.

Walk around the infield and ask people to name the horses in the race.

Heh.

After a few hours, most people don't even know there is a race.

But either way ... It's a celebration!

Anyone else think it's a bit odd to go over the top to celebrate a military victory over France?

Bryan, apparently not. You know, we Americans do hate us some French.

We champion the Alamo when we lost to the Mexicans. Go figure.

What else are the Mexicans going to celebrate, otherwise? Ceding major territory to America? Zapata? Vincente Fox? Zorro? Man, I wish they celebrated Zorro.

We do not like you so much now Sam Sessa! Whoooooosh ...

im hungry...for some coco stick, anyone mail me some?

About Sam

I've been The Sun's nightlife and local entertainment reporter for a couple years, and it's surprising how much the scene has grown in that time. Most of Baltimore's bars and clubs are unpretentious places with fairly cheap drinks and plenty of character. I like dancing and think this city needs more clubs, but nothing beats having a cold, locally brewed beer with friends in a comfortably full corner bar.
