The next Fab Five Friday

Ever been out to a bar and immediately thought, "That doesn't belong in Baltimore"?

This week, I want to list the most un-Baltimore bars around town.

I'm not talking about chain bars that are un-Baltimore in a generic sense, but bars that stick out like a sore thumb and make you wonder how they're still in business in Charm City.

Give me some suggestions.

Red Maple

It's not that Illusions isn't a great bar, it just sticks out a little bit in Federal Hill. However, with that being said, I think that it has some of the most potential of any bar due to it's concept and size. Sometimes it just takes a little bit more marketting and a little bit of luck.

13th Floor @ Belvedere Hotel.

nice. yeah Baltimore doesn't deserve anything upscale. Why doesn't one particular kind of place deserve to be here?
My vote? Anything on lower charles st., it's like hanging out with people who are in the 13th grade.

Do tell what makes a "proper" Baltimore bar?

Come on bob - the 13th floor is totally baltimore! It's the best view in town of all the flashing blue light cameras below!!

And even though I've been there for a few happy hours, something about the Bay Cafe seems weird...a total OC (Seacrets) rip-off.

Yeah, this kind of irritates me also. Why doesn't Baltimore deserve a variety of places? Sometimes I get so mad at the Baltimore attitude that anything upscale doesn't belong! What if I want to go to a lounge and have a cocktail one night and then go to a sports bar for Bohs the next night... Don't I have the right to expect variety from my city?

This post makes me miss D.C......(and don't even try telling me D.C. doesn't have variety!)

I am glad J.M. Giordano made the comment about hanging out with people in the 13th grade. Sometimes I feel the same way, but maybe thats just cause I live in Canton. Some people just need to accept the fact that they aren't in college anymore. I don't see anything wrong with getting drunk, put getting sick in front of my house, having a fight in the street with your drunk girlfriend at 3am, or getting into fights is just dumb.

OK- end rant!

Any bar that dares put out the [darn]velvet ropes or charge a cover charge for a DJ!! THIS..IS..NOT..MIAMI!!! Oh,and if you open a "club" in the back of an athletic club and charge $300 a night for the use of a futon?..you might just be a non-Baltimore kind of place...

Use your aggressive feelings, Don. Let the hate flow through you.

My vote goes for PUR and Red Fish. Both seem very out of place on Boston Street.

Thanks Obi-Wan :)~~

Angels Rock Bar. Period. Doesn't belong here or anywhere.

Has nothing to do with the upscale hate...Has to do with the fact that Baltimore has one of the best TRUE rock scenes in this country...Yeah, it probably does stem from the fact that Baltimore is a primarily blue-collar town, that has the "we rebel against the upscale" vibe, but that's what Baltimore is; that's what rock n' roll is.

I don't care what place you like, why you like it, who you are, what you do, where you do it, or when you do it....But keep it real!

Why do we need the plastic wanna-be rockers?

There's not a true rock n' roller in there. Call it what is: Angels Place To Go Be Seen, Stand There, Look Pretty, Play Halloween Rock Star, and Pay WAY Too [expletive] Much for a Drink.

Done.

red maple x3

it's like bizarro world for baltimore

I have to go with Don and Aqua. But then again because it's a wannabe Miami nightclub and it is in the back of a gym, doesn't that make it Baltimore?

Yea don...that place behind mac is ridiculous...they could'nt pay me to go there

Hey Sam, since the weather's about to break....how about you do a Best Spots to Drink Outside Fab 5? Unless of course you've already done it.

No Bay Cafe Votes!

About Sam

I've been The Sun's nightlife and local entertainment reporter for a couple years, and it's surprising how much the scene has grown in that time. Most of Baltimore's bars and clubs are unpretentious places with fairly cheap drinks and plenty of character. I like dancing and think this city needs more clubs, but nothing beats having a cold, locally brewed beer with friends in a comfortably full corner bar.
