Come down here!

Last month, I did a story about how bars are preparing for the Feb. 1 statewide smoking ban.

To find some of the places for an article, I cold called a bunch of bars I knew were havens for smokers.

The Mount Royal Tavern was one of them.

But the call didn't last long. Once I told the bartender who I was and what I was calling about, he said:

"Then instead of sitting at your desk and calling me, why don't you come down here!?!?"

Click.

So, frustrated but intrigued, I went down there. ...

As I walked in, the bartender was telling the story to one of his patrons.

"There he is!" he said when I saw him.

"Ha, ha, very funny," I said.

"It's hilarious," he said.

Though I didn't use the Tavern for the article, the employees did give me a couple good tips. So the trip over there was worth it, in the end.

Best bar in Baltimore hands down. And Mick is the best bartender..just watch out for the cherry bombs..WHEW!!

get a glass of the Pikesville Rye. $2
compare that price with a place like Club Charles

Wasn't Baltimore City's smoking ban supposed to go into effect Jan. 1? Was that trupmed by the statewide ban? Smoking still in full force in Federal Hill bars

Sam, when they going to publish this article?

Gman,

They published it in December. That's why there's a link on the word 'story.' It takes you to the story I wrote.

About Sam Sessa
I've been The Baltimore Sun's nightlife and local entertainment reporter for a couple years, and it's surprising how much the scene has grown in that time. Most of Baltimore's bars and clubs are unpretentious places with fairly cheap drinks and plenty of character. I like dancing and think this city needs more clubs, but nothing beats having a cold, locally brewed beer with friends in a comfortably full corner bar.
