Help Ben win back his ex!

MS reader Ben writes:

Tonight, I have a date with my ex. She lives in Hampden. She wants to get some dinner and go bowling.

Do you have any good (read: interesting) ideas? That Mustang place seems WAY to expensive (Bowling alleys should be seedy, smoke-filled and cheap) so I'm looking for a (preferably ten-pin) alternative.

Also, I'm trying to pick out a COOL place to get dinner (also that preferably allows smoking!)

Can you help, Sam? Perhaps any of your readers?  I'm in the process of trying to get my ex-girlfriend back, and any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!

Got any ideas for him?

Here are my suggestions ...

And by the way ... 10-pin bowling is against everything Baltimore stands for.

But between you and me, I like it better than duckpins.

Let's start with dinner.

I talked to Sun food sorceress Elizabeth Large, who recommended Woodberry Kitchen. It's romantic, it's a little expensive, and there's no smoking. But that was her first and only recommendation. (She seems pretty set on it.).

I say take her to Rocket to Venus (pictured). Cheaper, hipper, and you can smoke there (but not until after 9 p.m.). Plus, I hear they have some delicious takes on childhood grub like grilled cheese.

As for bowling, your only two options in town are Mustang Alley's and the Patterson Bowling Center. You and I both know the Mustang can get pretty pricey. On the other hand, it's the only one with 10-pin lanes.

Or, if you feel like making the 20-minute trip north, you could go to the AMF Towson Lanes, which I'm told has dozens of 10-pin lanes. They're open until 11 tonight. I've never been there, so I can't vouch for the place. But here is their Web site.

So Ben, if you go to Towson, lemme know how it is.

And good luck!

ur ar SO wrong about the bowling thing. Dundalk has two alleys and there's a tiny undergound one on York Road on the way to Towson. All are within a short driving distance. And why would a dude whose "cool" write the Sun asking for help anyway!

Take her to Dizzy Issie's. Amazing food, smoking, and if she doesn't like it, it's time to move on.

Ben, the bowling alley JM is talking about is AMF Lanes on Merritt Boulevard. They have 10 pins. The other one in Dundalk does not.

And JM, how would a dude like you find this blog in the first place? I didn't know they had the Internet in Dundalk.

Hey...I'm cool! At least, I try to be! I read Gutter Magazine online! Doesn't that say something?

I didn't just write The Sun, i asked Sam Sessa. He hosts cool radio shows, and i always enjoy reading his blog each day.

I just thought that he, you, JM, and any other readers would be able to offer some suggestions.

What's the name of this "underground" place? Has anyone been there? Smoking?

We've both been to Rocket to Venus before, i was sorta hoping for something...new-er.

Thanks for all your help, and thanks to someone for being [snob]-ish! ( I probably would too...the interwebs are made for smack talk)

Dear faithful Gutter reader,
All snarky blog-speak aside, I would check out Suzi Sobo on the Ave. Kiss Cafe in Canton is pretty cool. Good food, smoking OK, hip.
Amici's in Little Italy. Not too much $$. GREAT food.
Iggie's on Calvert. Good food, BYOB.
Henningers in Upper Fells. a little $ but awesome
Also check out El Trovodor on Broadway, also Arcos on Broadway.
Joe Squared (North Ave.) has upgraded their menu and interior and you can smoke.
AND....one of my fav places to eat in the city Nam King on 22nd and Maryland. All the Korean places in that three block radius are good too.
see, ask The Sun and you get Rocket to Venus. Ask Gutter and we'll give ya a list! Love,
JMG

ON Dizzie's. Good luck getting a seat there. Serioulsy.

Oh, and Ben, the little dive bowling alley on York Road is duckpins only -- it's called Taylor's Stoneleigh Duckpin Bowling Center.

Thanks for the list, JM. I've never been to the Korean restaurant district...that could be interesting.

You know, you actually met me and the ex. It was at the Sidebar back in June, at the Mod dance party (totally blank on name) You took a picture of us together, and I told you how i didn't own any pics of the two of us, so you gave me your e-mail, and told me you'd send ,me a copy. The next day (or two) later, I e-mailed you about the pic, describing our outfits so it'd be easier for you to find...and you never wrote back! :(

I guess you could tell back then just how "uncool" i really am! haha!

BEN! hey dude. glad you liked the list.
on that pic. nothing from that card came out actually. there were all kinds of errors when i opened. it.
As to not getting back to you, that's my fault. SERIOULSY sorry dude.
Hope you dig the Korean joints as much as I do.

My recommendation is to buy a Wii and play Wii Bowling. It's better than real bowling cause you can do it in your own shoes or with no shoes at all. Renting shoes...what is this? Russia?

Order a pizza a make a night out of it.

If that all fails, I recommend finding someone who doesn't like bowling.

Neither of us have been bowling in at least 5 years, so we thought it'd be fun. And SHE'S the one who's insisting on ten pin! I'm a local...born and raised on duck-pin!

Well, I'm leaving work for the day, gotta head home to primp and pamper for tonight.

Sam and JM, thank you for all your help! I'll let you know how it went tomorrow afternoon! Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Ben, Good luck getting her back on the cheap. She must fit in the 3 percent of women that don't mind frugality. Amici's is great atmosphere and well priced for Little Italy.
My suggestion, Geckos on Fleet for dinner - say hi to Nick - and then walk up to Patterson Park Lanes for some duckpin. She wants 10 pins? Tell her there are certain things that aren't worth changing...then go buy a Wii and bowl on your own until you get over this girl.

About Sam Sessa
I've been The Baltimore Sun's nightlife and local entertainment reporter for a couple years, and it's surprising how much the scene has grown in that time. Most of Baltimore's bars and clubs are unpretentious places with fairly cheap drinks and plenty of character. I like dancing and think this city needs more clubs, but nothing beats having a cold, locally brewed beer with friends in a comfortably full corner bar.
