Edward 40-hands

PJ, my new roommate from Atlanta, told me about a drinking game they have down there called Edward 40-hands.

Here's how it works: Your "buddies" duct tape two 40-ounce glass bottles of malt liquor to your hands. The rule is, you have to drink them both before you can have them removed.

Going to the bathroom is impossible, which means you have to hold it until you finish both. That's gotta be tough. 80 ounces of anything would make my bladder burst.

And, to make things even more delicious, he said by the time you finish the first one, the second one is warm from being taped for your hand for so long.

"It's awesome," he said, wryly.

We have it here too. My buddies and I play every year the day of the NFL draft. It's a great game.

Don’t make it sound like Atlanta is cooler than Baltimore.

Oh, yeah! I've heard of that. It had a different name, though: Hazing.

We also affectionately refer to this as "Sammy Sosa", as in 40/40 club (40 homers, 40 steals for Sammy).

Played it in college a lot - all-american my senior year.

I found the trick to be, if the rules allow, to alternate between the two and drink fast.

Also, if it is part of some overall binge drinking, you will get the occassional [wetting]-the-pants by rookies. Always a crowd pleaser!

About Sam Sessa
I've been The Baltimore Sun's nightlife and local entertainment reporter for a couple years, and it's surprising how much the scene has grown in that time. Most of Baltimore's bars and clubs are unpretentious places with fairly cheap drinks and plenty of character. I like dancing and think this city needs more clubs, but nothing beats having a cold, locally brewed beer with friends in a comfortably full corner bar.
