Chick Hall's to close

Chick Hall's Surf Club, a bastion of live music in Bladensburg, is closing later this month.

The farewell party is 3 p.m.-3 a.m. Oct. 13, and features more than a dozen bands playing all day. It's free, too. The club will be open until the weekend of Oct. 26, owner Chris Hall said, but if you're going to say goodbye, do it Oct. 13.

I'm sad to hear Chick Hall's is closing -- they've been around for more than 50 years. Hall said the smoking ban, not being able to sell beer after midnight anymore and the change in the area's demographics all contributed to the club's closing.

"This area used to be so full of music," he said. "We fought as long as we could.

I hate to see surf club close. Had some really good times there thru the years. I remember the first time I went there a mix drink was .85 that tells how long I've been going there. The only thing left will be memories.

Take care

About Sam Sessa
I've been The Baltimore Sun's nightlife and local entertainment reporter for a couple years, and it's surprising how much the scene has grown in that time. Most of Baltimore's bars and clubs are unpretentious places with fairly cheap drinks and plenty of character. I like dancing and think this city needs more clubs, but nothing beats having a cold, locally brewed beer with friends in a comfortably full corner bar.
