A date with Regina Spektor

Well, it's more like an almost-date with Regina Spektor.

In 2000, Spektor (pictured) was studying music at Purchase College in New York.

She recorded her early work in producer Ritchie Castellano's dorm room. Castellano's roommate was Wham City member Connor Kizer (also a member of the Santa Dads).

One day, Kizer asked Spektor on a date. But then, disaster struck.

"I heard that she was going to try to back out of it," Kizer said.

Heartbreak!

So Kizer, knowing the fate of his date, launched a pre-emptive strike:

"I backed out of it first," he said.

And now, nearly a decade later, when Kizer sees Spektor's success, he is not surprised. You could totally see it coming, he said.

"She was in that whole game -- even then," he said. "She was out playing shows at all the right places. She has this kind of Oh-I-don't-know-what-I'm-doing-I'm-just-toddling-along mentality, but she knows what she's doing. She knows how to get in there. She's savvy."

About Sam

I've been The Sun's nightlife and local entertainment reporter for a couple years, and it's surprising how much the scene has grown in that time. Most of Baltimore's bars and clubs are unpretentious places with fairly cheap drinks and plenty of character. I like dancing and think this city needs more clubs, but nothing beats having a cold, locally brewed beer with friends in a comfortably full corner bar.
