Gospel night on Election Day
The Rev. Al Sharpton, who will be holding a prayer service at the late Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s church in Atlanta on Election Day, is requesting that all African-American churches do the same.
The night is intended to usher in what could be a historic day for the African-American community and the United States if Sen. Barack Obama is elected president on Nov. 4.
Prayer services such as this may be reminiscent of the 1960s when people gathered at churches such as Atlanta's Ebenezer Baptist Church to pray, hear King speak and listen to gospel artists such as Mahalia Jackson.
Traditional spirituals such as "Lift Every Voice and Sing" and "We Shall Overcome" are likely songs to be recited next week. Both are songs of pride with the hopes that the seemingly impossible becomes possible by the hand of a higher authority.
