Gospel Today cover spurs controversy
Gospel Today, the magazine that covers music and many aspects of the Christian faith, is caught up in a controversy that could be good business for the publication that for the most part operates under the radar of mainstream magazines.
Apparently, Lifeway Christian Bookstores have pulled the magazine off its shelves and put it under the counter "like a pornographic magazine " because the September/October cover showcases five dynamic female pastors - Pastor Sheryl Brady of The River in Durham, N.C.; Bishop Millicent Hunter of The Baptist Worship Center in Philadelphia, Pa.; Pastor Claudette Copeland of New Creation Christian Fellowship in San Antonio, Texas; Pastor Tamara Bennett of This Is Pentecost Ministries in Sacramento, Calif.; and Pastor Kimberly Ray of Church on the Rock in Matteson, Ill.
Lifeway is affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention, which holds very conservative views on the roles of women in the church.
In fact, a spokesman for the convention said the magazine was stowed away because it conflicts with the church's doctrine.
Terry Hairston, owner of Gospel Today, appeared on the "Tom Joyner Morning Show" yesterday with CNN correspondent Roland Martin to talk about the controversy.
Martin, who is married to a Chicago minister, challenged Joyner's listeners to "give Lifeway Christian Bookstores hell" over the matter, according to blackvoices.com. But Hairston countered with: "I'd rather give them heaven!"
