Legendary record producer Jerry Wexler, who recently died at 91, was a major figure in the career of Aretha Franklin.

Franklin saw her gospel career transform successfully into the worlds of R&B and soul when she moved from Columbia Records to Atlantic Records, where Wexler produced some of her greatest hits.

In an article in today's Wall Street Journal, Franklin says "He provided the vehicle to allow me to perform and express myself.''

Franklin knew the significance of the 14 albums she made with Wexler. "Without sounding egotistical -- yes, I knew. I always knew. I'm a musician as well as a singer, and I listened. I've always listened."

To learn more about the relationship Wexler had with Franklin and other artists such as Ray Charles, read the Wall Street Journal article.
