"Lift Every Voice" Raises City's Ire

Jazz singer Rene Marie earlier this week made a statement in song when she sang the Negro spiritual "Lift Every Voice and Sing" instead of the National Anthem at the Denver mayor's State of the City address.

The audience was aghast. Marie sang the song, commonly known as the Black National Anthem, to the melody of the National Anthem.

According to the Rocky Mountain News, she was following her own artistic expression.
