BREAKING NEWS: Angelic Gospel Singer Margaret Allison dies

2058.jpg

Margaret Allison, founder of The Angelic Gospel Singers in 1944, has died, according to her recording label, Malaco Records, based in Jackson, Miss.

No further details were available at this time.

Allison formed The Angelics in Philadelphia with Ella Mae Norris, Lucille Shird, and her sister, Josephine McDowell.

The group was a known talent around Philadelphia, but quickly gained national attention. In 1947, they recorded their first song,"Touch Me Lord Jesus,'' which is still a gospel favorite even in the changing landscape of an industry that has gone more contemporary and away from what is known as traditional or old time gospel.

The group sang with some of gospel's greats such as The Might Clouds of Joy, the late Mahalia Jackson, Shirley Caesar, The Dixie Hummingbirds, The Soul Stirrers and many more.

Even though the members in the group changed over the years, it maintains the title of being the longest selling female gospel group in history. In their more than 60 year history in the business, The Angelics first recorded with Gotham Record in 1947, then moved to Nashboro Records in 1955, and finally Malaco Records, who they started with in 1983.

Earlier this year, the group released a CD, Touch Me Again.

This gospel legend shall surely be missed. My heart is saddened by the departure of another one of God's soldiers.

I've had the privilege of working with Sis. Margaret Allison & the Angelic Gospel Singers for over 15 years as an impromptu background singer and keyboardist whenever she came to our Labor Day gospelfest. Yes, she was scheduled to appear again this year. This year's event will not be the same without her presence. However, to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. This is true to all those who die in Christ.

On behalf of myself and my father, Bishop W. T. English
organizer of Sumter, SC's "Gospel In the Park" we will cherish the memories.

Babe, We grew up with our mother playing your music, it has inspired my family down thru the years. Your music will always live in our hearts. We all love you, but God loves you the best.

Mother Allison as we called her as she is my Godmother, she was a WONDERFUL WOMAN OF GOD. She will be greatly missed. We ask that you all will keep us in Prayer as we have alot of healing to do. She has fought a good fight, she has finished her course, now she is resting in the arms of JESUS.
Mama I Love you and will never forget the things you imparted in me and yes, I RECEIVE THAT IMPARTATION AND WILL RUN WITH IT.
LOVE YOUR LOVING GODDAUGHTER...

I had a chance, the very special opportunity to meet Mother Allison, and speak to her several times over the phone. She was so ordinary, and down home. I felt her warmth, and her deep love and affection for the Lord. She encorage me to continue to write plays, even though I made a huge stumble, which placed me in jail. Once out I reached out to her, only to hear that she had gone on. I still have the two letters of encouragement that she wrote me while I was in side. Telling me, never to look backwards, only forwards, and that Jesus died for all of our sins. I love you, and I will never allow your wonderful special annointed voice be forgooten, not in my life. Rest in Peace, you left huge foot prints, that will never be filled, only admired. To the family, and fans, let's all keep her legacy alive.

since the early 1980s i became a child of god.and began to listen to the message that the angelic gospel singers sang about. that was making preparations to see jesus.lord ,this lady lived her life and we will miss her,but heaven is in view, god bless her.we gotta let a child go home.

I am very late hearing this information about Ms. Allison going Home to be with our Lord. She was truly a great singer indeed, I am just now hearing this lost in this month of 'May 2009'
I have been listening to her and the Angelic Singers for 30-Years. I have a lot of their music, that I play as of to- day. Ms. Allison I Thank You for singing the word of the Lord, as I listened to you many late nights as a young soldier in West Germany, as I was stationed there 5-1/2-Years. Many, many nights I would play the Angelic gospel, and have a great time. May the Lord rest her soul, I am just shocked to have just now found that out, she is gone home. I send my prayer out to the Family, God is to wise to make a mistake, They are having a great time in the Heaven for sure now, with another great 'voice' has entered the Kingdom. Thank you Lord for this saint.
