Orchard Market & Cafe reviewed

fesejuneHere's a link to the today's review of Orchard Market & Cafe by John Houser III.

Pictured is the duck fesenjune in pomegranate-and-walnut sauce, which I think belongs on a hall-of-fame entree gallery.

See if John's first meal at Orchard Market was a revelatory as it's been for other Baltimoreans over the past 20 years.

Your weekend dining PLUS with the sleeping pet of the week

max2I hope everyone had a relaxing and safe weekend.

It sure got humid.

Who ate where?

Anyone have soft shells?

I'd love to hear from folks who went down to the beaches - what was good there?

The sleeping pet of the week is Max. Max is dogphew.

Your long weekend dining PLUS

memorial dayIt's Memorial Day weekend.

Here's a list of Memorial Day events in Maryland.

What else?

We've got the annual Brew at the Zoo Saturday and Sunday (confession: I've never been); the NCAA Division I Lacrosse Championships (confession: I've never seen an entire lacrosse game); New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys play 1st Mariner Arena on Saturday (confession: I was the "ugly one" in a boy band named the Staircase Witz).

Here's the Weekend Watch portal?

Who's grilling? Anyone invited to a crab feast? Who's dining out in Baltimore? Who's hitting the road?

bentleyWhat did everybody do this weekend? Sorry this post is coming so late in the day, but I really would like to know.

The sleeping pets of the week are Bentley and Mallard. They live with Jesse Sandlin!

betty

What did you all do this weekend. The weather wasn't so bad, after all. I haven't posted yet about dining with graduate; I've missed some (most?) of the college graduations, but there's still high school.

Who dined out this weekend, and what did you have?

The sleeping pets of the week are Betty and Sophie Rutheiser.

Your weekend dining PLUS

bromoLet's see, it's the closing weekend for the Baltimore Museum of Art's smart photography exhibition Seeing Now: Photography since 1960. (Hey, why did throw threw a big party last week, on film festival weekend) instead of this one?).

So, Gertrude's is the obvious lunch or dinner choice, but also consider dropping in on the new Meet 127, which last I heard was still being harassed, thousand-pinprick-style, by the Remington Neighborhood Alliance. Also nearby, Donna's and Carma's Cafe.

Also arty, an open studio tour at the Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower.

Elsewhere, families going to Big Truck Day at the Baltimore Museum of Industry will need some recommendations.

Where do people eat before a
Merriweather Post Pavilion concert? Whitesnake fans will want your tips. What else are people doing this weekend? What are your dining plans?

More weekend stuff here.

Your weekend dining PLUS featuring the sleeping pet of the week

lcuy sleepingSo, how was Mother's Day? What did you see at the Maryland Film Festival? Who made it down/up to Mt. Vernon for the Flower Mart? What was your favorite part of the Kinetic Sculpture Race? How was the Sheep & Wool Festival?

You get the idea.

Now, Here's Lucy, the sleeping pet of the week:

"(This is) Lucy in the middle of her afternoon window-perch nap, to be distinguished from the naps she takes in other locations throughout the house.

She loves food, so I'm sure she'd appreciate being featured. Her favorite is chicken, from our plates, preferably while we are still eating it."

Your weekend dining PLUS the sleeping pet of the week

jimmyjams

What did you do this weekend? Did you make it out to dinner? Who made it to the Sugarloaf Crafts Festival? Or to the Transmodern Festival?

I had a great bowl of pho at Mekong Delta. I wish I hadn't been on foot that day. I would have eaten half of it and taken the rest home. As it was, I fought to finish it. Good to see the place so crowded on a Saturday afternoon.

The sleeping pet of the week is Jerome Jameson (aka Jimmy Jams). "He is a 3 month old Jack Russell mix from Defenders of Animal Rights. He, like all puppies, plays hard and sleeps hard. In fact, all our pics of him are either adorable sleep-shots or little tan and white blurs. He enjoys wrestling with our other terrier mix and finding the squeaker in all his toys." --Karen of Hampden.

Your weekend dining PLUS featuring the sleeping pet of the week

brooksLet's see.

Who's dining where? Er, I guess you could start by looking at this gallery of 50 best restaurants in the counties.

Here's our Baltimore Weekend Watch page. What looks tasty?

The avant-garde Transmodern Festival is unfolding at the H@H Building on Franklin Street. Have you ever been? It's one of those things I'm glad to see other people supporting so I won't feel so bad if I end up not going. I only have one critical standard when it comes to live performance - it has to start on time.

The Sugarloaf Crafts Festival begins today in Timonium and runs through the weekend. There are couple dozen food artisans there among the other crafts-folk. Who's been before?

Your weekend dining PLUS featuring the sleeping pet of the week

kimaLet's see, it's Easter.

► Here's a list of Easter dining specials, and here's a blog post that covers largely the same territory. You'd think the two lists would be identical. Wrong.

► Bluegrass Tavern is holding its own little farmer's market on Saturday, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. They say they're going to have ramps and local asparagus and they'll be selling their homemade bacon jam.

I made up a song about bacon jam; it's sung to the tune of "Muffin Man," and it goes like this:

"Bacon jam, bacon jam, bacon jam, o bacon jam; bacon jam, bacon jam, bake-bake-bacon jam."

► Today is Earth Day. Here is a list of local Earth Day observations. Except for this dining promotion at B&O Brasserie, I haven't posted anything about Earth Day at all. Maybe if a certain planet would back off a little bit with all of the pollen, I'd be more willing to throw this blog's support behind it.

Your weekend dining PLUS featuring the sleeping pet of the week

odieSpring arrived last night. I forgot to look at the moon on Saturday. I decided to inventory every article of clothing I possess. (Why?)

The Baltimore Greek Week is just getting started. My picks -- the $16 fixed-price buffet at Zorba's and the $20 fixed-price menu at Ikaros. There's more information here.

Talbot County Restaurant Week continues through Sunday

Monday dining specials around town are gathered here.  The dining specials main page is here.

Coming soon

On Saturday, April 2, there's a big food-and-wine event at the B&O Railroad Museum. Sante: Spoil your Palate is a benefit for the National Kidney Foundation of Maryland. Participating restaurants include RA Sushi, Bistro Rx, B&O American Brasserie and Talara, and the honorary chairs or Brendan Dorr (B&O), Hugh Sisson (Heavy Seas Brewery) and David Wells (The Wine Source) There's more information here.

The sleeping pet of the week is Stagger Lee's puggle, Odie

Your weekend dining PLUS with the sleeping pet of the week

ollieSo...what's up this weekend?

Spring comes on Sunday, at 7:21 EDT. I'm ready, are you? I'll be dancing, as always, around the Battle Monument.

How will you be welcoming the spring?

Here's the Baltimore Sun's round-up of things to do this weekend.

Foodwise, there's:

Talbot County Restaurant Week begins on Sunday.

The Foodie Experience at the Hippodrome Alton Brown. I'll be covering it. And I'll be tweeting live. (Follow @gorelickingood)

Maki Madness, a competitive eating event at RA Sushi. Take a look at the photo gallery of last year's event.

The Baltimore Greek Week kickoff at Ikaros on Sunday. I'm going to try to have a longer post with more details a little bit later today. There are a bunch of attractive dining deals as part of this first annual celebration. You can find the official website at the link above.

Here’s Ollie, our 5-month-old kitten. Exhausted after a full morning of tin-foil soccer, knocking over vases, and eviscerating catnip mouse toys. (He’s actually available for adoption, if you know anyone….)

Your weekend dining PLUS featuring the sleeping pet of the week

Some of you told us about your weekend plans here.

Frequent Little Italy Restaurant Visitor was headed to Lebanese Taverna for the first time -- how was it it?

Ryan97ou was planning a jam-packed birthday weekend, with trips to the Brewer's Art and Mick O'Shea's

I dropped in for dinner at The Corner, the new joint in Hampden, not for an official review but just to check it out. I mentioned that The Corner has kangaroo on the menu. It's not on the menu -- and we weren't told about it -- but a friend from the newsroom who went to the Corner later the same night said that he was told about it by his waiter. He ordered it and loved it. I wonder why our waiter didn't tell us.

I also made it out for Sunday brunch at  the Gypsy Queen Cafe food in Canton. Red velvet waffles and mac-and-cheese cone with with bacon "bling". More on that trip, later, too.

Let's see. I've got to have a Sterling's fried seafood sandwich. Other than that, I have no firm dining plans this weekend. How about you?

We've got Bethenny Frankel's Skinny Girl Night Out at the Hippodrome on Saturday night. Any good Skinny Girl dining tips in that neighborhood? Who can vouch for Alewife?

Also, on Saturday, an Amontillado tasting at Wesminster Hall.

Sunday is the city's St. Patrick's Day parade. Who has a favorite Irish pub they want to sing the praises of?

The Sun has rounded up its coverage of weekend events here.

Reading words got you down -- here's Super Sam Sessa with his weekend picks.

dogAnyone make it out for Annapolis Restaurant Week? How about the  Rockfish Celebration, which  concludes tonight?

Who bought what at the American Craft Council show this weekend? Who took in the Monster Jam at the 1st Mariner Arena?

How about all of you Jersey Boys fans; where did you eat before the show?

And how did you do on your Oscar pools?

Let' see. Annapolis Restaurant Week continues through Sunday. The Rockfish Celebration continues through Monday. I'm hoping to work my way through at least part of the offerings.

The American Craft Council show is this weekend -- who has a game plan for finding good food around the Convention Center?

Here's a round-up of other things to do around town this weekend.

And here's Sam Sessa, in a new weekly video feature, telling you about your weekend options.

washmonHow was your weekend? Mine was very quiet. The newsroom is quiet today. I think some of staff is taking the day off because their kids are off for Presidents Day, which is what the State of Maryland calls the holiday. The official Federal holiday is Washington's Birthday. I've still never been to Mount Vernon. I mean the one in Virginia.

Your Valentine's weekend dining PLUS

sleepymaxI bumped this comment thread up, because I like hearing about Valentine's Day dinners.

I also replaced the sleeping-pet photograph. This is Max. Not five minutes before I received this photograph of Max, I received another one of another dog named Max. But this Max photo was in format that was easier to work with. Send in more sleeping pet photos to richard.gorelick@baltsun.com. I never know what to use for the "Weekend Dining" posts, so maybe I'll just start using photos of our sleeping pets.

As I was calling around yesterday, asking about reservation availability, I also asked a few restaurateurs how their weekend had gone so far.

They all said it was a great weekend: The weather was a big reason why, and so was Valentine's Day falling on a Monday, which extended the good times over four days.

crocusThe four-day Valentine's Day weekend starts tonight -- are you ready?

It's supposed to get up to 50 degrees on Sunday. Pitchers and catchers report to Sarasota on Sunday, too.

I'm going to spend the weekend dodging crocuses -- look out, there's another one!

It's spring!!

What are your plans this weekend?

Also see more Valentine's Day coverage.

anistonI'm writing this only hours before kickoff!!!

Some of you told us about your weekend dining plans and escape routes. I hope your team won. I wonder who won the chili cook-off at Captain Larry's!

I am both thrilled and not about Liz S.'s description of the savory bread pudding at the Brewer's Art -- see comments here. Thrilled because she made it sound so good and not thrilled because I thought about it all the blamed weekend.

Jennifer Aniston is in this blog post for no reason, but I'm sure there was a really good reason she was at the Super Bowl.

Your weekend dining PLUS -- Lunar New Year and the Super Bowl

cnlI'm declaring this a good weekend to go out dining. The weather system seems stable and all of the restaurant week promotions are over. Seems too like a good idea to get out now before next week's four-day Valentine's Day extravaganza.

Is anyone planning a Lunar New Year's outing?

Of course, it's the Super Bowl on Sunday. Take a look at this post on places to go to avoid having to watch the Super Bowl.

But if it's the Super Bowl you want, you might also consider the big event at Captain Larry's (pictured) in Riverside.

Your weekend dining PLUS

1251I nested. I still intend to post about my dining adventures in the Keys; this weekend was about recovering from that.

I hiked Gunpowder's Lost Pond Trail -- that's something, right?

I think that I wasn't alone in taking things easy, but then again, I tend to be terribly narcissistic, assuming  that everyone is feeling exactly as I am.

For all I know, it was bacchanal city for the rest of you.

So, what did you do?

Your long weekend dining PLUS

gooseWell, that's over.

I hope everyone made it back home safely.

I'm flying out of here in a few hours. I'll off to an undisclosed location for a week of fun n' sun. I'm ready. (Actually, I'll disclose the location once I get there.)

I'm going to try to post. I've already written and scheduled a few, too.

Please post about your food intake, both in restaurants and at the Christmas table. I have a three-hour layover in Charlotte Douglas International Airport and will be looking for some good reading. I'm counting on you.

Anyone have goose?

Your weekend dining PLUS

tersiguel"Your weekend dining" is now "Your weekend dining PLUS"

I like hearing about the other things people do beside dining in restaurants. This time of year especially, we're coping with all kinds of disruptions, both welcome and not, to our regular schedules -- out-of-town visitors, gift shopping, returning college students. Who has found a good shopping ritual, maybe one that combines an annual luncheon with friends. Actually, that's not a bad idea. Wouldn't it be fun to meet up the Saturday before Christmas in Ellicott City, have a shopping walkabout, and cap the whole thing off with dinner at Tersiguel's?

Whatever you do this weekend, make it a safe and happy one.
