Vegetarian dinner No. 1

CheeseSouffle.jpg

Faithful readers know that my daughter is off meat and poultry at the moment, so I decided I should try to cook vegetarian dinners every night until Thanksgiving.

If I weren't on vacation, I would tell her to suck it up and eat what's on the table (usually take out), but I feel with a little more free time than usual I can afford to cater to her every whim. Plus my husband likes vegetarian meals. ...

The best faux meatballs in the country

OneWorldWins.jpgI've done a lot of exciting Top 10 lists on this blog, but none quite as exciting as PETA's Top 10 Vegan Meatballs.

Normally I would continue to make fun of them (and me) except, hey, one of Baltimore's restaurants is on the list, the One World Cafe near Hopkins University. Its vegan meatball sub sandwich is a winner.

Suddenly I feel pretty good about the list, considering it's a national one. ...

Eat your vegetables

VegetarianPizza.jpgI know I don't always give as much love as I could to vegetarians, especially not in the winter when I crave meat and animal fat. But I do love veggies, I live with a couple of semi-vegetarians (I know, I know) and I respect people who make the commitment to a vegetarian lifestyle. They are likely to live longer and healthier lives than I will.

Anyway, whether you're a vegetarian or just love your vegetables, a new Web site may be of interest to you. The just-launched VegNews.com is supposedly the largest, most comprehensive vegetarian Web site in the world. I say "supposedly" only because I'm not supposed to just take someone's word for it. However, it looks pretty comprehensive to me. ...

Eat your vegetables contest

VegetarianChili

After our recent burger-o-rama, I want to give a little love to vegetarian readers of this blog and those who aren't into meat in a big way.

I've been a little hesitant about doing a Top Ten Best Vegetarian Restaurants because I'm not sure we have ten of them in this area, best or not. I did  do a Top Ten Places to Eat Healthier earlier, which included my favorite vegetarian restaurants.

But if you frequent vegetarian places you might be interested in this contest:

Top Ten Places to Eat Healthier

GreatSage

Well, this crew is certainly planning to eat healthier in the new year. I asked for suggestions and got exactly one response. I've gotten more recommendations asking for Turkish-Irish restaurants that serve sushi.

Thank you, MD Canon. Not only does he/she have a suggestion, he/she explains exactly how to eat healthily there. I couldn't do any better, so I refer you directly to the post

I didn't want to make this just a list of vegetarian restaurants. (That's another Top Ten.) Instead these are places that are promoting the idea of healthy eating in various ways. Because of that, I think they will be sympathetic to whatever your special dietary requests are.

I also didn't want to fill up the list with ethnic restaurants, but you should always consider them when you're trying to improve your eating habits. They tend to go easy on the meat, heavier on the vegetables and whole grains; and if you stay away from the deep-fried offerings, they can be lower fat.

But keep in mind that with Asian restaurants you may very well be getting more sodium than you should be eating.

I wanted to put Liquid Earth in Fells Point on my list, but I haven't heard anything about it lately, and when I called the phone rang and rang and there was no voicemail message. I know it's closed Mondays, but even so I wasn't comfortable including it.

VegBaltimore

GreatSageMac

Faithful Reader Frank Gomez passed along this link to VegBaltimore, a vegan and vegetarian guide to Baltimore. As he says, nice to see so many vegetarian listings.

In case I haven't said it enough times, I love tips. Tips are great. Thanks!

(Sun Photographer)

I got this e-mail from Helen:

A group of co-workers at union memorial hospital want to give a doctor a gift certificate to a vegetarian restaurant. he lives in phoenix, so a place in the I-83 corridor would be perfect.

Here was my not completely satisfactory answer, so other suggestions are welcome: ...
