Top Chef favorite Spike Mendelsohn at Pimlico today



If you're a Spike Mendelsohn fan, the former Top Chef contestant will be holding cooking demos in the Preakness Village today at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and noon. You might even get a sample of dishes like Classic Crab Cakes with Chile Garlic Mayonnaise. (Sounds good, but once you pair a crab cake with chile garlic mayonnaise you can't call it classic anymore.)

He'll be cooking with Kelsey Nixon, his Food2 co-host. (Food2 is the Food Network's new online channel.) ...

Famous Foodies: Martha Stewart

MarthaS.jpgI chose Martha Stewart for today's Famous Foodie (One in an Occasional Series) because I actually interviewed her once before she got really, really famous. It must have been in the '80s.

Believe it or not, she came to the Sun to talk about her new entertaining book, I can't remember which one. I interviewed her at my desk.

What I do remember is her sweeping into the newsroom in a mink coat that she told me was her daughter's. She was slim and blond then, and I wanted to say to my deskmate Jack, "Please put your tongue back in your mouth." ...

Giada! Giada! Giada!

Giada.jpgFor the next in our irregular series on Famous Foodies, I couldn't resist this plea by Anonymous:

Giada! Giada! Giada! (With pictures please.)

That would be chef and TV host Giada De Laurentiis. Anonymous is clearly obsessed, as I can tell from this post when no one had mentioned her name:

Don't you dare say anything bad about my Giada. 

So our first order of business is for someone to articulate her appeal for those who don't watch the Food Network. And please keep in mind this is a PG-13-rated blog ...

Guy Fieri: Love him or hate him



Owl Meat suggested I do a regular feature on foodie TV personalities. The general frothing at the mouth over Rachael Ray and the page views it generated inspired him.

I thought was a great idea except that I would actually have to do some work since I don't watch the Food Network.

However, the interest in the discussion of Guy Fieri under my post on the Blue Moon Cafe (don't ask how they got there) made me think I should at least have a separate entry on him because some people read the entries but not the comments.

So if there's anything left to say about Guy Fieri, here's where to say it. ...
