The Souper Freak is here

souperThe Souper Freak is here. The new food truck,  has been on the road for 3 1/2 weeks.

The van, done up in Orioles orange and black, is parked today near the corner of Calvert and Monument streets. The weekly schedule is posted on the (adorable) website.

The truck's operator is Irene Smith, who happens to be married to Scott Smith, the chef-owner of Big Bad Wolf Barbecue.

The weekly changing menu features four soups. This week the lineup is Moroccan spiced  chickpea, cream of asparagus, miso with shrimp and tofu, and Italian Wedding soup.

Smith said that, as she's building her customer base she'll always carry at least one familiar sounding soup on her menu.

The truck serves baba hanoush sandwiches, too: a grilled cheese, the "Albuquerque is  a Turkey," and the Souper Power Wrap, an early favorite, according to Smith.

A rainy day like today is perfect for a soup truck, Smith said, who added that she's still  very much looking forward to the summer, when she can bring out her gazpacho and other soups made from hot-weather produce.

A cup of soup is $4, a bowl of soup is $6, and sandwiches range from $4 to $6. Not sure if the truck is cash only, but I'll know soon.

We need something like that up here by the state center

come on 'round!

Myself and two co-workers tried out the Souper Freak food truck while it was on the JHH campus near Monument St. I won't try again. The guacamole was BROWN and had zero taste. The soup of the day had dumplings, but in the entire cup there may have been 2 dumplings and they were very small. My co-workers had grilled cheese with ham. There was one slice of deli ham on it for an extra $1.

I'm eating a grilled ham and cheese from there right now that definitely has more than one piece of ham. And the Moroccan Spiced Chickpea with a dollop of yogurt is definitely cutting the chill on this rainy day.

I'm digging into the Italian wedding soup right now. The chicken meatballs are wonderfully flavored!

The cream of asparagus is awesome and the grilled cheese is perfect. I'm a fan.

I am sorry you had a bad experience. I am confused because we never had guacamole and chicken and dumpling on the menu together. And we always put more than 4 pieces of cheese and 3 slices of ham on our sandwiches. But that's ok. Come back and I'll treat you to whatever you'd like.

TOTALLY off topic, but ... . For the first time ever, my little family wants to eat out Easter Sunday. What restaurants in the North or Northeast City or Baltimore County are serving? I don't care if it's breakfast, brunch, linner, or dinner. THANKS!!

I'll get on it right away!

I have! I tried the corn salad and the fish soup last week. Corn salad was great - loved the charred peppers - and the fish soup was interesting. Not what I expected...the broth was more carroty than tomato-y, but still tasty. And I appreciated that it was served with a chunk of decent crusty bread, because I am a bread snob. :)

I'm at JHH and am dying to try this. Hopkins is a big place with many streets and entrances, does anyone know where they park on Tuesdays?

Washington & Madison (or maybe Monument, I can't read my notes). Irene Smith told me she may be going to JHH on Thursdays, too

Tweety Cat -- they were parked right by the Washington St garage. Up one block from the medical library. Burger King is acros the street.

Learned the hard way that it is cash only.

Sorry! I meant to get back in and say that.

Stop ripping me off!

I'm Rick James Bi#%$
