Ciao, Corvino!
Taverna Corvino has closed in Federal Hill.
Brian McComas tells me that heads are not hanging low about the Corvino's closing. In an emailed message, he says that "Corvino's was a favorite with the locals but just never reached the level we expected.
The space/layout is a challenge, but we hope to correct that moving forward. We expect to open up (a) new concept midsummer incorporating the space next door with a nice courtyard in the back..."
I never made it to Corvino, but here is Elizabeth Large's Monday Morning Quarterbacking post concerning her review of the Italian restaurant in Little Italy. Apparently, the review didn't show up online where Elizabeth was expecting it to, which might explain why I can't find it now.
What did you think of Corvino?

I've been to Corvino twice - once for a night cap and once during Rock Fish Week to try their entrées. I thought the food was good and the service was excellent. I am very interested to see what this new concept involves. I love the idea of a courtyard - outdoor dining is rare in Federal Hill.

Oh man! That was a nice place to just hang and be casual. Was more of a restaurant than a bar scene so that probably hurt it a bit. Cant wait to see something new!

Corvino's was a favorite of the locals! Thanks for the effort!
courtyard? slightly better layout with more bare space? Sounds fun!

i hardly ever got the food, tried to buy a drink once or twice there and the female bartender at that time was incompetent. She didn't know if they had Maker's Mark as she stood behind the bar. I had to tell her - well maybe u should turn around and look to see if u have it!! I dont think she knew if they had any brandy either, didn't know that cognac is brandy and same thing, didn't think looking at that top shelf was part of her job description. I was also there trying to order for three at bar and bartender just cut me off to talk to manager as if they just gossipping - im not surprised they're gone, i really tried to spend money there but it was too ugly of experiences!

I remember never seeing anyone in it and hearing the food and ownership wasn't the best. I guess what I heard adds up now.
Just open a Chipotle in that location and make everyone happy.

I liked the place and appreciated something a little more upscale than its neighbors Mothers and Mad River. I must say I remember the music being a little too loud in there, which made it a tough place for a date or a quiet conversation, and that might have hurt it a bit.
I just hope the next place isn't another Mad River/ Magerks/ Stalking Horse type of place.

yeah thats the answer a chain quick serve joint. Actually it was a nice place to have some food and drink..one of the few places that catered to over 30 crowd. i hope it stays food focused whatever it becomes...and maybe "FedHillGuy" can actually go in and spend some $$$ rather than guessing.....

well i am sad and excited at the same time. The owners tried to keep this place in the wine bar spirit after taking over Juniors..I agree it seems like a tough space. Hopefully a courtyard and some additional bar space will do the trick! We need upscale places in Federal Hill.

ning Quarterbacking post concerning her review of the Italian restaurant in Little Italy.
It would be hard to find it in Little Italy.
I always found the crow, symbol of death, to be an inauspicious symbol.

Food was good, service atrocious.

I think the symbol was a Raven since the name Taverna Corvino meant Tavern of the Black Raven.....maybe that was an issue if people couldn't get it. Service was atrocious so make sure that is part of the re-do too!

service was horrible...the management were jerks...food was ok

Agree with anonymous about service, management and food. As with McComas' other restaurant it seemed to be the case of mutton dressed as lamb.

Sorry to see it go! I hope that it stays food focused! with a cool bar for the local over 30 crowd!

I always thought the food was good, and drinks were fair priced. I really like the bar itself- a very interesting piece of wood. Hopefully they don't get rid of it!

I went there twice -- once when they had a small plates menu and then just recently when they changed to regular entrees. The small plates were very good, but my recent visit was not like the first time. The food was going downhill. I ordered an heirloom tomato salad and got plain old unripe red tomatoes. The drink menu was always inventive and fun. I always had friendly bartenders.

@ sobo: I found in an Italian/English dictionary that "corvino" was translated "little crow".I've never seen it defined "black raven"."Corvo" I found, means "crow" and "ino" in this usage means "small".Thanks,Mark Corvino.

Just look up "raven" in the English to Italian translator at Babelfish.
Is there any other color of raven besides black (excluding the plaid ones on the Island of Dr. Moreau.)?
