Monday Morning Quarterbacking -- the Golden West review

goldenwestHere's the review of Golden West cafe.

A conversation here about Golden West inspired a Top 10 Controversial Restaurants in Baltimore category.

Was I aware of all this when I sat down to write the review of Golden West?  Yes.

Did I try at least to approach Golden West as though I were meeting it for the first time? Just a little.

Did I consider writing about Golden West without any reference to its reputation? No.

What are thinking about Golden West these days? Anyone have a recent change of heart about Golden West, or another restaurant?

That's the Aztec burrito at left.

They're supposed to have WiFi... the last time I was there, it was a meeting where I needed WiFi. That wasn't working AND they seem to have a nonchalant attitude towards people who want a sugar-free beverage. I think it's weird to be all concerned about nut-free, dairy-free, meat-free and their house drinks all come pre-sugared.

Thank you for your review. I have never been to Golden West. Your end comments underscores the reason. I eat out not the atmosphere-which will keep me away. Nor the service-which will definitely keep me away. I eat out to eat and poor food trumps every reason not to eat out.

Colonel Tamar, I doubt the Golden West is supposed to have wi-fi, and I seriously doubt they would tolerate you using your laptop there. They don't allow cell phone use, for Pete's sake. There are other places in Hampden to have a meeting (that needs laptops), but I don't think Golden West is it.

I have eaten at GW perhaps ... more than 50 times in 5.5 years. I am not a regular, by any means, and I highly doubt any of the staff would recognize me, but in that time, I have had maybe 1.5 bad experiences. And they weren't really that bad.

I was there just last night and had the cheerfullest waiter on the planet (he is always smiling and handles questions and requests with ease) who brought us free fries for our food taking too long -- which, frankly, was not that long. He is delightful.

I don't understand the bad rap that GW gets, and I'm glad you reviewed it again, Richard. Your review is fair, especially about the menu editing, and I'll keep eating there -- and defending it -- as long as I'm in Baltimore.
