Dover Sole -- a reader want it

Who has seen Dover Sole lately?

A reader writes:

Where can one get great Dover Sole. (Restaurant A) used to be a wonderful source but not recently. (Restaurant B) not very reliable.

We are looking for simple sauté with lemon butter caper sauce. Any suggestions ??

I know Tio Pepe has it, and the Black Olive and Oceanaire (one or more of which may or maybe not be Restaurant A or Restaurant B)

Let's help this reader out.

Yes, Black Olive and Oceannaire both have it. Very expensive at both. It's difficult to help the inquirer without knowing the names of the problem restaurants.

Last time I had Dover Sole was at THE PRIME RIB...prepared simply but terrific...
If you are adventourous.. IKAROS on Eastern Ave has a broiled flounder that is also a very good meal!!

Hue, what do you mean by adventurous?

Whole fish, head on...you gotta fillet it yourself..beaucoup bones..
We always kept a slice of bread handy whenever we ate fish with bones!!

I always wonder how much of what is served as "Dover sole" is actually the real thing. It ought to come with a little passport.

If it has bad teeth and a chip on its shoulder, it's probably the real thing

Okay, I walked into that one, Owl.

The real deal is hard to find, and usually very expensive. If it's on a menu and under $30, it's probably lemon sole.

Black Olive had it when I went for RW for an additional $20. I've also seen it in the past at Oceanaire, but believe it was upwards of $60!!

@Dahlink - I frequent the Black OIive (as I live right around the corner) and the Sole in their case usually has a tag on it with Her Majesty's seal. It seems authentic to this Yankee!

Thanks, Fells Pt Dad!
