Alchemy is open in Hampden
Alchemy opened Tuesday, November 30, in the Hampden Space where Grill Art Cafe was. The restaurant's address is 1101 W. 36th St., and the phone number is 410-366-1163. The restaurant is open Tuesday through Sunday for lunch and dinner.
There's no website yet, but photographs on the restaurant's facebook page reveal a pretty snazzy looking joint. The owners here are Michael Matassa and Debi-Bell Matassa, who ran the Fusion Grill up in Fallston.
If you drop in on them this weekend, drop back in on Dining@Large on Monday and tell us all about it.

I don't care much for the Jessica Rabbit in the window. That's my only observation so far.

Went there last night. We got salads, some appetizers and a burger. Big portions and tasty results. My favorite was the mojito mussels. Just a great mix of flavors. We also got a tuna tartare app that was good. The burger was huge and it may have overwhelmed the roll that it was on. They have an excellent wine list. We will be going back. For the quality, it was very moderatly priced. Very excited for the new dining option in Hampden. I have my eye on the corriander cowboy steak next time.

I'm happy to hear this. I still miss the Fusion Grill, which was a real loss to Harford County. Best of luck to Michael and Debi - I'll have to check out the new place.

We went there tonight and had a very enjoyable, leisurely meal. We were there for two and a half hours, which we didn't mind because we weren't in a hurry. Our waiter Chris was great, very personable, but he sort of "paced" our meal by waiting to take our order for the meal after taking two separate orders for appetizers and drinks. Like I said, we didn't mind because we were enjoying each others' company, but other diners may not like waiting so long between ordering. I think maybe the kitchen was backed up so he did it on purpose. Anyway, the four of us shared hummus, which was fine, although it should be served with more than the 6 flatbread wedges it comes with -- restaurants always give you too much hummus and not enough bread to go with it. We also each had a different salad, and they were all very good. For entrees, we had the Angel Fire Chicken (2, not sure if that's the right name, but it was great), Red Snapper, and Chile Rubbed Pork Loin with sweet potato tamale. Everything was outstanding, especially the sweet potato tamale, which I thought sounded odd but turned out to be delicious.
Before we left, Michael Matassa came out into the dining room to greet diners at their tables, and we spoke for a few minutes. We told him we'd be back!

Five of us went there on Saturday night, Dec. 3 at around 6pm. Only a few of the small tables were occupied, but all were overly laden with glasses, plates, etc. They tried to put us in a booth that could comfortably seat 4 but was set for 6. We ended up with 3 small tables pushed together instead. We ordered appetizers and entrees all at one time - and that's how they came. We had barely begun our first courses when the seconds arrived - with the exception of the crab dip which came to my brother only after he had almost finished his monte cristo sandwich, which he said was delicious - as was the crab dip which we all shared. All in all - terrible timing from the kitchen for which the poor waiter apologized profusely. The food was good, especially the asparagus gnocchi. Unfortunately, my niece asked for a box to take home what she couldn't finish. The waiter took her plate, set it in the back and someone disposed of it. We waited while they made a new serving of it for her. I think we'll wait a while before trying it again.

ATTENTION PIKESVILLE: This place is an absolute treasure!Getting there early I sat at the bar with Debbie and got the whole story; great perserverence on their part to get this restaurant open. The service and the food were extraordinary. We started with the beet salad and soup of the day, both of which we exceptional; whole yellow and red beets still on the stalk which small chunks of gorganzola and fabulous wine vinegar. Dinner was the encrusted salmon special, catfish filet with succulent crab, and monte cristo sandwich, with a side of brussel sprouts roasted with thick bacon, in cream sauce; just incredible. Dinner for 3 with 3 glasses of wine plus desert (all home made) was $113
You can park right on the street out front. Great comfort food for a cold winter!

Really nice appearance...warm and toasty.
Food is just average > and all is rather pricey.
Crab Bisque was very good. Lamb was tasty, however steak was NOT good at all. Meals include nothing..I mean nothing. Dinner bread and rolls are most dissappointing. Horrible bread! Brussel Sprouts were suggested as their speciality side. They were just horrible! Appearance nice...but awful taste! Almost like the establishment itself. Looks nice...however, nice really goes no further~ Server, Emily, had a terrible attitude. Her service almost ruined our meal.
Owners/Chef came to our table....she talks way too much. If that is her version of hospitality, we felt she should turn it down a notch! As a local, we think that there are other choices in Hampden that are much better.
Lets see what happens at this restaurant in time....

DISSAPPOINTING
We tried Alchemy recently for Sunday Brunch.
Food had a beautiful presentation, but lacked taste. We were not too impressed with our order. Drinks were very strong, almost to the point of not being able to enjoy them.
Food took way too long to receive. Nearly 40 minutes after we placed our order.
Very small dining area. We were dining literally right on top of our fellow diners. Only elbow space away, which we found most unpleasant. Our waitress said that we could not move, that all booths were reserved. Could not imagine that.
Waitress was very young and unprofessional. She knew nothing of the food menu or drink selections. She, Jordan, had no personality at all and did not even offer an apology regarding the delay in our order. Heard other tables complaining over the same.
Way over priced for what they offer from food to service.
