A wikipEATia for the Baltimore Running Festival

The 10th Annual Baltimore Running Festival is this Saturday. The sponsors of this notably well-produced event provide this very thorough document about road closures, an hour-by-hour account of what to expect.

And of course, you should always think to turn to The Baltimore Sun's own Michael Dresser and his Getting There blog for the inside scoop on traffic matters.

Still, I think personal experience is the best instructor. So, go ahead and post here any advice, tips, and alerts you have for your fellow hungry people.

What did you learn last from past events about getting around? Did anyone miss a dinner reservation. I had an email from someone who was wondering about the 32nd Street Farmers Market in Waverly - what went down there last year?

Did someone find the perfect oasis, or stumble into serendipity?

Around mile 15 marathoners (expected arrivals 9am-noon) run through Fells Point via Aliceanna St. Todd Conner's, on the corner of Aliceanna and Broadway, is opening at 8am for supporters and on-lookers to eat, drink and cheer! The runners literally run right by the patio tables. From experience running the race I love anyone who is willing/able to cheer me on, whether they are drinking booze or passing out gummy bears. Tc's is the perfect place for those who aren't racing to actually enjoy themselves during the race but still be a part of the festivities! I am not running this year so I will be there drinking $3 Bloody Mary's and cheering the runner's on.

In order to stay clear of these runners I'm going to focus my weekend dining on drive-thrus.

I think it's stretching a bit to call Todd Conner's sidewalk tables a patio, but I do think it was wise of them to try to attract marathon watchers, since much of their normal clientele won't be able to get their due to road closings.

Being a slow runner, I expect to be running past Todd Conner sometime in the neighborhood of 11:00 am.

In past years, I volunteered at a water point because there was no way anyone could get in or out of Patterson Park. Better to just go volunteer.

I'll do it again this year, although I'm a bit concerned with how I'll get down there. The street closings really are a major pain.

A patio (from the Spanish: patio meaning 'back garden' or 'backyard') is an outdoor space generally used for dining or recreation that adjoins a residence and is typically paved.

Granted it is from Wikipedia but I think that it fits the definition.

I would say that the majority of Todd Conners patrons are from either Fells Point or the surrounding neighborhoods so I don't think they will have trouble with road closures. What type of clientele do you assume that they get?

Now let the discussion of how I am a shill start.

A sidewalk isn't a patio. A sidewalk is a public space, a patio isn't.

From the definition you give, Anonymous, Todd Conner's sidewalk tables don't count, because Todd Conner's is a business, not a residence.

Right on, Anonymous. Some people's goal in life is just plain buzz kill. I wish the lame semantics hyper-literalist materialists and fun haters would go away and stop ruining the party.

Maybe Hal and Lisa could start their own blog called "You Opinion Is Wrong". That would be fun. Or perhaps, "Mutually Assured Destruction." Funner still.

Back to the topic at hand...I live in Charles Village and the race goes right by my house. The elite runners come through around 10:00; the bulk of the runners come through between 11 and 1.

The Waverly market is open, but get there before 9 if you want to get in and out without trouble. If you come after that, no guarantees, but you had best park north of 33rd Street or west of Guilford Avenue. That way you can get to the JFX easily or to Cold Spring/Northern Pkwy to head east or west.

The farmers really do appreciate customers who make the effort on race day.

A sidewalk with tables is not a patio. Likewise, a flute without holes is not a flute. However, a donut without holes is a danish.

I've run the race a few times and I'm doing it again this year. Here's what I would do if I were not running - Don't even try to drive anywhere. It's impossible and frustrating. Get into the city early if you don't live there and if you do live there certainly don't drive around. You can get coffee somewhere in Canton (Firehouse, Starbucks, THB) then find a comfortable spot near Patterson Park to hang out and cheer. The race heads right up Linwood Ave around mile 16. You could also watch and cheer from Boston street. A bunch of bars in the area are open for brunch on Saturdays. Claddaughs in the O'Donnell Square serves breakfast 9am - 1pm. I just called James Joyce to find out if they were planning to open early for the race and they said no. That's too bad...they have a great outdoor area.
