Wegmans tweets Columbia store delay

WegmansFor those of you eagerly awaiting the 160,000-square-foot Wegmans grocery store that's supposed to come to Snowden River Parkway in Columbia, the company has issued an update -- via Twitter.

"Some off site road improvements are scheduled 2 begin this summer. Currently we're hoping 2 open in 2012. Thx 4 your patience!"

So reads the post, which came to my attention as a retweet from @HowChowBlog.

"What about local labor? Say 12 volunteers each weekend. We bring our own shovels. We'll work in teams. Could we get XMas 2011?" @HowChowBlog replied.

"Did we mention Money Mag's #2 place in America to live for 2010? With Wegmans = #1 in 2011" @HowChowBlog noted later.

My tipster, a former newspaper man, was bummed by yet another delay -- and a little surprised by the way it was announced.

He wrote: "It's not the way companies announced news when I was a newspaper reporter ..."

No credit to HowChow for this?

I'm sorry. Oversight. Adding it now. LV

Been ti Wegman's and it's nice and all but I don't get what the big deal is. Am I missing something? I mean sure they have great stores with acres of products but you can find most of it closer than Hunt Valley, or Columbia. Personally I wish Harris Teeter would move into Baltimore in a BIG way. They have great stores and great prices. Also Bloom is a great chain with an amazing concept, And these are neighborhood markets, not destination shopping

MDtopdad, Bloom isn't in Baltimore (unless you think that the Baltimore area includes Odenton, Scaggsville, or Montgomery County), and until Harris Teeter opens at McHenry Row (if it ever opens), its nearest store is in, um, Columbia. Location is relative, anyway -- Wegmans may not be your neighborhood market, but it is for those who happen to live near one (whether in Hunt Valley, in upstate NY, or elsewhere). While I don't live near Hunt Valley, I like shopping at Wegmans whenever I happen to be in the area.

I can't wait for Wegman's; some people in Columbia have tried their best to keep them out--go figure --I can't wait for them to open!

hmpstd, I totally concur with what you are saying, that these stores are not in the Baltimore area. That much I am already aware of. However, I was making a point that there are other options to Wegman's right in your-well, MY- neighborhood that don't require a tank of gas and a Gold card to shop. For what it offers, Wegman's does a fine job, better than most. And for those lucky enough to live close by one, God bless you all.

When I lived in New York, I found Wegman's to be more expensive than its competitors.

I shop at the Hunt Valley Wegmans every week. While it is still a wonderful place. It is not the same as when they first opened. They have replaced many of the unique things with there own brand which is just awful. Shelves not nearly as full and produce wiped out more often than not. I do try different times of the week so can never figure out the produce thing

I currently live in Rochester, NY, the home starting place of Wegman's but am moving down to Hunt Valley and I'm very excited that Wegman's is there. Contrary to what carolb said, they're actually quite competitive here. They post price comparisons right in the entryways so people know they're checking (I checked, so I know those are real prices too).
