Red Star mystery

Red StarA friend of mine spotted this sign on a chain-link fence, next to some waterfront condos, not far from the foot of Thames Street in Fells Point.

There must be a good story here.

I've put in a call to Red Star, but no one was immediately available to talk about whatever it is that's going on.

When I hear something, I'll pass it along.

Doesn't sound like much of a story here -- presumably Mr. Silverstein owns the vacant lot, and has grown tired of having people park their cars and walk their dogs on his lot, with the attendent risk of liability. Those who choose to boycott Red Star may do so, but Mr. Silverstein is equally within his rights to control his own property.

I see no problem. I think the Red Star itself will be a great new place ... (wait for it) ... for me to poop on!

I think I know which vacant lot that is. It's just north of a condo complex whose name is escaping me at the moment (it's across Fell St. to the northeast from Henderson's Wharf). I go by there on my Sunday long runs, and the lot has been fenced for ages. I've seen people inside the fence with their dogs, though. The complaint apparently is that the gate is now locked.

I'll probably run by there on Sunday. If I do, I'll try to see if the sign's still there.

Private property not being used is fenced for a reason: liability, lawyers and lawsuits. It's a shame, but the American way.

Here are the facts on this "mystery". The Red Star leases space in the parking lot adjacent to the vacant lot which is owned by the Union Wharf Company. The vacant lot has become an extreme liability, especially with the free for all dog park that has developed. A tenant was recently bit by a dog off the leash that someone had brought on the property so all the gates were locked. Naturally, the lawyers called the property owner to place blame....While we sympathize with dog owners that have no place to let their dogs run free in the City ( which by the way is against the law ), it was their choice to have a dog in the City. If someone wants to pay our liability policy and $250K in property taxes they are free to shit on our lot ( and their dog too ), otherwise please respect private property.

Thanks for filling us in. LV

Stay classy, Larry

I understand your desire to lock the fence, even as a city dog owner. Do what you have to do.

However, I don't understand why Red Star continues to have such poor service, specifically servers that are either missing in action or completely inattentive...it can't be going unnoticed?? I LOVE the food, the atmosphere and the free parking. I would come by so much more often if it wasn't for the service.

Whoops, must have had Larry on the brain... That was me (above)

Dueling Larry's. Awesome. What next? [Insert Three Stooges joke here]

Do i hear banjos?

On the service note just wanted to let anyone reading this know that they have a new general manager and chef who are improving the menu and service. so if you went before you should go again bet you would have a better experience

Does Larry own Diablita Cantina as well? The food was cold and drab and the service was like someone pushing a used car on me yet after numerous attempts to receive a reply from the manager I'm still letdown. These places obviously don't stay open due to quality. Must be alot of money from somewhere, a dream of owning a restaurant theme, and that's about it. Great websites and buildings don't make great food.
