Name that restaurant

This query from a reader involves a restaurant that was before my time, but I'm posting it on the off chance that someone remembers something:

My Father & Grandfather had a restaurant in Baltimore for 35 years from 1929 to 1964 on Lexington St. near Charles St.

My question however is, there was a restaurant back in the 50's & 60's that was on Frederick Rd near Hilton St (I think)

They had waiters in white coats, was one of the best at the time, and had a fabulous menu with "Frog Legs" and "Duck' and things no one else had. I remember the menu was huge.

I'm trying to compose a list of the restaurants that I remember from that time - and just can't think of the name of that one. Can you help me?

I also would like to find a recipe from each of the old restaurants. Could you give me any insight on where to look, or what days did the Sun run restaurant write-ups back in the old days?

One thing I could tell him is that the Baltimore County library has an online database of all Sunpapers except, oddly, from 1985 to 1990. I just discovered it this week.

I remember a very nice restaurant called Gannons. I was never there (too young) but I remember it was across the street from the Carroll Station Post Office where I would meet my dad after work

Does the Sun library exist any more?

UMBC has the News American library

Hi. I have 2 books (used, found at the Ukazoo) which are compendiums of old Baltimore restaurants--with some recipes included! They're kind of hilarious b/c the food back then was so much richer than we are used to now and the ingredients so bland.

These are not OLD old books, maybe from the 70s-80s, but the restaurants are "classics" and at that time had been around a while.

Are you sure you're not thinking of the place at the intersection of Rolling Road and Frederick? A big white house place? It's still there and open--been meaning to go there on my tour of "places that might close soon when lots of their elderly patrons die". (Like the Valley Inn, only place you can get a cream cheese and olive sandwich!

Email me if you want me to try and scan some book pages and I will look for particular places.

No, no, no, EL, this ISN'T how you play the game. Ask Sam Sessa.

You run a photo of an idiotically obscure and tiny detail of the restaurant, and then you watch as your loyal readers out-do one another trying to name which place it is before anyone else does.

I'm wondering if you maybe thinking of Meushaws ( not sure if I have the spelling right) ?

I think I know the place -- the name might not be exactly right but I think it's: La Pauvre Papillon.

The restaurant at Frederick and Rolling Rd is (was?) the Candlelight Inn. The one at Frederick near Hilton probably was NOT Duffy's Tavern, which masy still be there. I haven't visited Duffy's for probably 25 years.....

I found this information concerning the fire at Gannons back in 1955. Is this your restaurant? It was at the corner of Frederick and Ellamont Avenues:

1955: 4 Alarms - Box#7221 - 1210hrs - Frederick Ave & Ellamont St - Southwest Baltimore - Fire involved the 3 story brick Gannon's Restaurant during some of the coldest weather in years - High winds blew over a 35' ground ladder, injuring Firefighters George McAlleer & William Martin, E-30 - 4 alarms were sounded before the flames were extinguished by ice coated firefighters. (TUH)

Hi Claire,

By any chance is a restaurant named Carmens mentioned in your books? They were located on 25th St, near Charles or St. Paul. They were there during the 50's and 60's. Fantastic food.

Jack

Thank you Everyone.
The restaurant I was looking for was Gannon's. It was old, with white coated servers, a Huge menu, and things you could'nt get anywhere else.
It was on Frederick Rd, about a block off of Hilton St.
Halibbut - Thanks - I didn't realize that they burned down in '55?
I was a youngster back in those days - I remember my Grandmother taking me there.
Does anyone know how get a write-up, or menu, or any info. Thanks

I thought it was Gannons! Glad I could help you.

After the fire in 1955 my family reopened the restaurant across the street at 3141-43 Frederick Avenue in the large white building. We indeed had white coated servers and an extensive menu.

Papillon. was my favorite, along with the grill behind it for lunch.
I just was talking to a friend who lived in Columbia about this place, it was way ahead of it's time.

Oh my does this bring back memories. I remember Gannon's well. I used to go there with my parents, and Mr. Gannon would let me sleep in his office in a big reclining chair while my parents ate. It had a fabulous reputation with my parents who were in the milk business and supplied the restaurant with milk. I also think that the Kiwanis club met there some nights. I ahve been away from Baltimore for decades and still remember it well. What ever happened to Gannon's?

Does anyone remember Al Getz's restaurant out on Rt. 40, just past Normandy Shopping Center?

Indeed Papillion was ahead of it's time, very close to a restaurant that used to be out on Reisterstown road in an old house about thirty years ago, excellent food, super wine menu, also ahead of it's time.

Bill_H-I remember Buell's and Sir Walter Raleigh but cannot place Al Getz's?

Also, is the Reisterstown restaurant you are thinking of the Country Fare Inn?

Mags:
Getz's was at the corner of Rt 40 and St. Johns Lane. I remember Buell's well, Sir WR draws a blank. But you are correct, the Country Fare in was the restaurant on Reisterstown Rd. Thanks for that one.

My dad Skip Meushaw Owned Hilltop/Meushaw Restaurant ,before that he had the Franklintown Inn. In the 50s Gannons burned down. Wile they were rebuilding my dad hired there Chef Emmit Boykins. Emmit stayed with my dad until he retired in the late 70s

my family owns the franklintown inn now since 1964

This message is for either John Meushaw or Charles Scott. I have a small 4" by 5" advertisement from Nov.3,1957 Baltimore Colts program if either of you are interested in having it. It reads.... Skip Meushaw's Franklintown Inn, on 5200 Franklintown Road and the phone number of the day was LIberty 2-5875. There is a water stain in the right upper corner. I used to live in the Baltimore region up until 2006, now residing in South Carolina. Perhaps if either of you are interested in it, I can mail it to you. I guess you would have to get my email address from Richard Gorelick .
