Lunch in Baltimore: It's a good thing

So who are these brave, brave Baltimoreans who dared have America's high priestess of entertaining over on Valentine's Day?

I speak of the mysterious Mr. and Mrs. Phung Doan, with whom Martha Stewart lunched last Sunday. Stewart reports on her blog that the Doans treated her to a Vietnamese feast to celebrate the Lunar New Year.

"I was very much impressed with the traditional foods that Mrs. Doan artfully prepared, including goi cuon -- shrimp spring rolls and banh chung -- rice cakes wrapped in banana leaves and stuffed with mung beans and pork."

It's not like Stewart just happened to be in the neighborhood. She schlepped to Baltimore -- she doesn't say from where, but presumably from Connecticut, Long Island or someplace else she hangs her hat -- aboard the Acela specifically for the meal.

I'm still trying to track down the Doans. Anybody out there know them, and know if they take reservations?

don't know them, but you can find them via google...

I'm sure that LZ, being a reporter, knows that she can Google them. I think she was hoping for some human interest information from someone that knows them and knows the backstory.
{I think EL put a curse on the captcha's. I am on my third one and still can't read the stupid things).

Yes, CG, the Captchas are getting increasingly muddled. Very annoying.

I can read this one, though: our leaches

How strange is it that Martha not only came here to eat at someone's home for Valentine's Day, but she came into a town that just had 2 blizzards and is barely shoveled out to do so?

I wonder if the Doans live immediately across the street from the station?

The captcha add-on clearly serves no purpose, since now we still get the same amount of spam plus the spam yelpers: Spam, spam, spam, spam, bacon and spam at 1:03.

Why do we even care? Removing the stuff doesn't have an effect on future spam, since it's mostly from bots. As for individuals who are pimping some product, I think comic derision is a more fun and effective deterrent.

Typing in the code words is extra time I don't want to spend when posting.

Repeating the captcha words and making a pun is really played out. All these things slow down the process and create a commentary narrative that is jarring at best. For me, it's the textual equivalent of burping the alphabet at the end of every paragraph. Funny once, tiresome quickly.

Other blogs don't have this lame, ineffective captcha distractcha. Maybe we could go back to the old way?

Release the Captcha

That's deep, RayRay.

Joyce, does Martha do her show live or is it taped? Either way, the segment or show could have been taped well before the storms.

TerrierGirl, Martha Stewart's blog indicates that she made a personal trip to Baltimore on Sunday, 2/14 with friends to visit the Doans. While Martha took several dozen photos of the trip and the food, it doesn't sound like the trip was taped for her TV show, as far as I know.

Owlie, let me make sure I'm following. You are against the Captcha.

Thanks hempy. I was too lazy to look it up myself. It's hard to believe Martha does anything that doesn't end up as product.

Perhaps it's fodder for a Chinese New Year story a year from now in her magazine.

Frankly, I think Martha's calmed down a bit. In the old days, she'd probably take a film crew and go to the Mekong Delta to dine and film the entire preparation process for her show.

I do wonder where she came up with this family to entertain her though?

Joyce, the Doans' daughter works at B of A with a good friend of Martha; the good friend and her husband accompanied Martha on the trip to Baltimore. (Judging from the photos and comments on her blog, you'd think Martha had never been on a train before, much less been to Baltimore.)

thanks, hmpstd. I figured there had to be SOME connection and she didn't just pick them out of a phone book!

My guess is she hadn't - to either!
