Next Sunday's review: Diablita Cantina

Pork%3APineappleTaco.jpg

Next Sunday I review Diablita Cantina in the space where the short-lived Tsunami was located next to Lemongrass.

It was more of a bar and less of a restaurant than I expected from talking to an owner over the phone, but the chef is trying to do some serious Mexican food beyond nachos and guacamole. ...

The owner was adamant as well that this is Mexican, not Tex-Mex.

In some ways it reminds me of my Top 10 list of bars that are into fine dining. I'm sure Diablita could do quite well just serving margaritas and beer and burritos. It's not content with that.

Does it succeed? To find out, you'll have to read my review in next Sunday's  A & E section.

I'm not huge fan of the beans that seem to make up so much of Mexican food, so I was happy to see that that Diabla Cantina had a good variety of other things.

When we went, I was eating low-carb, and the staff was able to bring veggies to dip into the queso.

We had lunch there on Friday. We were the only party there when we arrived around noon, although there were a couple more by the time we left. We both did the "two selections for $11" lunch special. Some of the selections worked better than others, but in general we were intrigued enough that we plan to go there again and try some different things.

Captcha: Rudi franko. That might be Cleatus' New Jersey lounge singer name.

Had dinner there the last week in November. I'm hoping it was just opening jitters...

Food was okay- would have been good if it was hot but most came out luke warm at best.
We started with the chips and salsa- it was good but I'm partial to restaurants who give me free chips and salsa- instead of charging me $6. However, the salsas were really good.
Ordered the shrimp tamale as an appetizer. It came out and was completely frozen in the center. We sent it back and it never came back out because our food was almost up. We had the chicken quesadilla and the peanut chicken tacos and split both. The peanut chicken tacos were delicious. The side of rice and beans would have been good but again, that whole temperature thing...

The chicken and spinach quesadilla was a non-event compared to the great flavor of the peanut chicken in the tacos.

The service was horrendous. I think they only had one server and one bartender on which would have been fine for a typical Monday night but there were about 5 or 6 tables in the restaurant and we hardly ever saw our waitress unless we could see from a distance her chatting at the bar with other patrons while we waited.

We decided that if the food had been at proper temperature and they had one more waitress on that night it probably would have been a great meal so we'll go back and give them another shot.

Went there Saturday night and definitely experienced lukewarm pork fajitas. Other than that, the fajitas were great. Our server was clearly extremely busy -- the place was packed -- and the service reflected that, but he did a good job considering the circumstances. We did have to wait a bit for drinks, enough so that I considered leaving (we ordered our food before getting our drinks, and we'd ordered our drinks the first time the server visited the table). That said, the food would have been really good had it been hot.

Ate their with 2 friends last Wednesday. The service needs to be addressed ASAP or this place is going no where. We almost walked out because we stood there so long. The only thing that kept us waiting was that there were people at the bar with drinks and a table with food so we knew there were workers somewhere. Once seated we rarely saw our waitress...

The food however made me want to go back. I had the pick 2 lunch with tortilla soup and spicy pork burritos. Great flavor and good size portions for the money. I hope you get more should you order from the regular menu however.

They offer brunch and we were all given coupons to come back.

Not only do they charge $6 for chips and salsa, the portions of salsa are tiny and if you ask for more, they charge you for that too! They even charged us for extra pico de gallo with my entree. For me, tex mex or mexican, whatever you want to call it, please give me chips and salsa for free when I stand at the doorway for 10 minutes waiting for someone to offer me a table.

I've been debating whether to check this place out...I think I'll stick with Geckos!

I checked this place out last week and loved it. I didn't mind paying for the chips & salsa since they were really good. The chips, especially, go far beyond what most places give for free so to me it makes sense that they charge. For my main course, I had the Steak Burrito. It was delicious--the perfect blend of sweetness and spice. Perhaps my favorite part of the meal was dessert. I had the Tres Leches cake which was melt in my mouth good. The service was good, not perfect, but friendly and attentive enough to keep me happy given how much I enjoyed the food. I'll be back.

I went there shortly after it opened and it sounds like a lot of the 'opening kinks' that we attributed our bad experience to haven't been worked out. First, the food did not live up to the wonderfully written descriptions on the menu. Second, the service was very poor; talking to people at the bar while we waited for food, drinks. The worst offense was when we ordered a flight of 3 tequilas and sent a flight to a table of friends. The waitress did not know which tequilas were what and then said she gave our tequilas to the other table. We asked her how she'd fix this and she kind of shrugged and said something like "it's tequila just drink it, sorry."
We had the shrimp tamale, which had one shrimp inside, all cornmeal, not even luke warm. Sorry I'll stop now. It's so nice inside, I hope they can work on their consistency in the kitchen and service.
