Monday Morning Quarterbacking: Azul 17

AzulMargarita.jpg

My review of Columbia's new Mexican restaurant and tequila lounge, Azul 17, ran in yesterday's Arts & Entertainment section.

I don't have much space to review the food in print, so I didn't want to go on about my annoyance over my $9 margarita that was mostly ice. But it was annoying -- and I wasn't even paying for it. I ordered a second one and it was all ice, too.

I should do a Top 10 of places that put too much ice in their drinks. Suggestions?  ...

Midnight Sun Sam didn't seem to have the same problem when he and Amie had drinks at Azul 17, so maybe it was an anomaly.

I would love to hear from someone who ordered the $100 margarita, or even the $40 margarita. And I would go back just to order my own tamarind margarita -- I just had a sip of my friend's, but I'm still thinking about it.

The ice in drinks Top 10 has promise, but I'm betting your editor won't like it.

How about places that ALWAYS have the correct amount of ice? Or bartenders ( as they are usually the person with the Hand of Ice) Too little ice is as annoying as too much, being that it doesn't keep the beverage cold enough as a whole and then the three cubes of lonely ice melt and water down your drink.

I'm trying Azul 17 tomorrow but have mixed expectations based on your review and the HowChow review. BTW what's up with all the spam in the comments of this story. Howard County already has a moderately priced and well like Mexican restaurant in El Azteca (with great margaritas). We'll see if this trendy $100 drink club/restaurant will succeed.

Aaarrgghh. Thanks for pointing it out. I'll see if I can get it killed out. EL

I'd say 7-11 puts way to much ice in their drinks. Every time I turn the knob it even come out of the tap icy!

After visiting Azul 17 I can't help but ask several questions: Why did you not decry the ridiculous decor? White 70's naugahide (sic) (poor baby naugas) and shiny blue walls, or pink booths with colorful paintings of bulls and agave harvest. Also, why do I have to pay $4 (plus $2 to try one of their less indifferent) for a basket of nachos and indifferent salsa at lunch even though it is free at dinner when several of the dishes are the same price? Why did you show pictures of appealing tacos even though the ones they serve are horrible? Why did you neglect to mention the $200 tequila shot?

Sorry, can you tell I was less than entralled?

After Dahlink's comments about her lunch at Alizee, I'm beginning to realize just how different lunch can be. EL

A friend and I went there this weekend to try as part of HC restaurant week. The only place to eat is at the bar and they have about 5 too many bar stools so that both my friend and I were literally pressing legs against each other and other patrons.

Food was good but I would add a second margarita peeve. Why only is half the glass salted. Cost too much?

Service was abysmal. Our server was way more interested in leaving than serving us. We got there early dinner time (6PM). Asked for chips and salsa but did not receive. Got the appetizer (one for two of us — both fast eaters) and about 3 minutes later literally received our dinners when the app was still half eaten.

I don't think El Azteca should have any worries about sustained losses to this place. I would never go back.
