Monday Afternoon Quarterbacking: The Reserve

ReserveTuna.jpg

My review of the Reserve in -- to avoid a neighborhood argument I'll call it the Federal Hill area -- appeared in yesterday's paper. Federal Hill is one of those places where I would expect upscale little wine bars and bistros to do very well, but actually bars with standard bar food seem to do better.

Obviously there are exceptions; Corks and Regi's come immediately to mind.

Anyway, the Reserve falls somewhere between the two types, and I'll be interested to see how it does there. Parking is a real problem unless you're willing to walk. Be careful; you now need a permit after 6 p.m. to park on many of the residential streets nearby.

What kind of food would you call this? It seems like Baltimore has a lot of places like this: Bar setting, may or may not have tv's, but its certainly a bar. Peter's Inn, Annabel Lee come to mind. Is it just upscale bar food? Bistro food in a bar? Its certainly more than bar food but not really American bistro fare either. There has to be a good name burried somewhere.

Peter's Inn is miles beyond Annabel Lee in quality.

what's a gastro-pub?

Lissa: I'm glad you think so. What kind of food would you call it?

I think of it as a quirky Baltimore thing. Upscale bar food isn't right. Peter's Inn isn't just upscale, it is very, very good. Bistro food in a bar might be closer. Fine dining bars just sounds weird.

I like it, though, and wouldn't mind seeing more of it.
