Local Beaujolais Nouveau celebrations

BeaujolaisNouveau.jpg

I recently got this e-mail from Sturmy:

Any local restaurants/wine markets/etc holding a Beaujolais nouveau celebration this year?

I'm sure there are, but I haven't gotten any press releases yet. I'll pass the information along if I do. And maybe you would post below if you know of any. A lot of people would be interested, in spite of how mean serious wine drinkers are about the wine.

One wine critic compared drinking Beaujolais Nouveau to eating cookie dough, which seems a bit harsh but is funny. ...

The reason the subject has come up now is that Beaujolais Nouveau is released the third Thursday of November.

This list of 10 facts (I don't know how fascinating they are in spite of the headline) will bring you up to speed about the wine if you don't know anything about it.

The only place advertising is Tersiguel's in Ellicott City which is having a 5- course $75 dinner on the 19th. Usually Petite Louis offers the wine but they aren't advertising. If you get on their e-mail list they will update you.

The best if you can make it is at Bistrot du Coin in DC which celebrates the evening of the 18th and then typically the DC mayor opens the first bottle at midnight and customers are plied with free plastic cups of BN (befitting its quality) till closing.

The Oishinbo manga has a chapter involving Beaujolais nouveau. It delves into its history and explains the disdain serious wine drinkers have towards it.

renfield 1969 - Oishinbo manga! - blah blah blah. B.N. is just fun.

Kitkat,
Exactly!! The wine is lousy, but its an excuse for a nice evening out. I worked under Chef Paul Crowninshied at Chartwell years ago and he would throw a big BN party every year. Used to be a great time.

Nothing wrong with either raw cookie dough or BN. Some days are filet mignon, and some days are hamburgers. Nothing wrong with either one.

I wait with anticipation for it every year. I know its supposed to be young and fun and not very serious, but it seems like two out of three years I'm still disappointed.

It seems like ages since one came out that tasted like tangy soda pop for adults -- and isn't that what it's about??

BTW, FWIW, we had a great dinner at Cuba Libra in the Tropicana last night. 15 course "Taste of Cuba" was $39 and worth every penny and then some.

Many of the Beaujolais events are getting posted to www.LocalWineEvents.com between now and then, fyi.

Valentien Restaurant in Bakersfield, CA is having a weekend celebration Thursday-Sunday! Special Menus, Free Tasting of the Release, Live Music, and other surprises.

Who's up for a roadtrip?

Look at the bubbles in the wine glass. What could they be from? Saliva? Do you think the photog snuck a sip when no one was watching? I know I would.

Oh, Sam! The bubbles are to make a more interesting photo, I'm sure (and hands off my glass!)

Sam, if you look close you can see at the bottom of the glass -- where the red ends and it turns all gray? -- there's a tiny replica of the Eiffel Tower and below that is a tiny amphibian (I didn't want to say "frog" because someone could misconstrue that as anti-Gaulic indelicacy) and that's where the bubbles are coming from.

When a Baltimore, Maryland newspaper blog posts an inquiry for "local" Beaujolais Nouveau celebrations, something tells me that they don't have Bakersfield in mind.

jl, you just blew my mind.

If you are going to California to celebrate make it Berkeley and the party in the parking lot at Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant.

For those who have access to charcoal grills my suggestion for Beaujolais Nouveau is to grill some garlic (or your favorite) sausage and serve it with some roasted vegetables and a green salad. Being an apartment dweller I will take some boneless chicken thighs and cook them with lots of shallots, garlic, country ham, and sausage with either buttered noodles or steamed rice.

My choice of wine is Domaine Dupeuble. This wine is made with natural yeasts, was not chaptalized and is bottled unfiltered, unfined and unsulfured. This is wine in its most natural state.

jl, stop stealing my shtick!

don't worry baby

I'll make a wager that you'll see events at Metropolitan Coffeehouse & Wine Bar in Federal Hill (just released a new fall menu, btw) and Grand Cru up in Belvedere Square. Probably a tasting at The Wine Source, and I think I saw something on a flyer at Quarry Wine & Spirits........

Petit Louis Bistro is indeed celebrating the arrival of Beaujolais Nouveau on November 19th with a special menu to complement the wine. Chef is still working on the menu but it should be available by the weekend and will be posted on the website www.petitlouis.com.

how about a Frito-Lay tasting?
where is the love?

A wine shop in St. Louis used to hold a contest on the Saturday after the release to determine the best food match for BN. The winner every year was White Castle Hamburgers.

This just in my e-mail inbox: Tickets/reservation sign-ups are now on sale for the 2009 Beaujolais Nouveau Release Party at Metropolitan to be held Thursday, November 19, 2009 at 7:00 pm. We again have arranged to procure two small barrels of 2009 Joseph Drouhin Beaujolais Nouveau and will be throwing a "Drink From The Barrel" shindig. I believe that we are once again the only ones in the Baltimore area to be offering Beaujolais Nouveau from the barrel.

Tickets are $50 per person and include Beaujolais Nouveau from the barrel (tickets are limited to 40 people to ensure that every one gets enough wine), Roast Suckling Pig, killer French cheeses as well as other tasty treats.
