Richard reviews Chicken Rico

ChickenRico.JPG

I know how fond a lot of you are of Chicken Rico in Highlandtown. (Fond may be an understatement.) So I think you'll be interested in Other Reviewer Richard's review, which appeared in today's paper.

I must be getting hungry. Peruvian chicken sounds pretty good right about now.

I love rotissere chicken, but I am rarely on that side of town.

Didn't like the yucca frita? Richard!

Actually, sometimes it has sat too long in the warming tray. But I still love it. I guess I have low standards when it comes to yucca frita.

Every time I stop by Chicken Rico I go in with the intention of getting something other than the rotisserie chicken, and every time I walk out with rotisserie chicken. It's the same as my inability to drive by a pit beef stand without stopping and getting a sandwich. I just have something in my brain that tells me I need these things.

The other stuff sounds good though.

A group of our friends refer to this as Crack Chicken. Its that good.

Chicken Rico is very good. My politics normally lead me to advocate restrictions on immigration, but the chicken there is so good that I find myself becoming a proponent of open borders.

My personal favorite is Pollo Fuego at the Columbia/Jessupe/Elkridge triangle. Their chicken is great, the yuca is the best, and their aji verde is certainly the most intense around.

I recently had a flier stuffed in my door from Chicken Rico that advertised that they were now making deliveries.
Last night I called to place an order for delivery. The person who answered the phone did not speak english and it took nearly seven minutes for someone to pick up the phone to take my order. OK, not a huge problem, but the person who answers the phone should at least be bilingual.
Anyway, I placed my order and began anticipating a delicious dinner. About 15 minutes later, someone from Chicken Rico called to say they couldn't make any deliveries because their chickens caught on fire. I asked "All of them? All of your chickens caught on fire?" "Yes" he said and then apologized.
Oh well, I'll give them a couple of days to clean up the chicken ashes and try again.
BTW I ended up ordering chili from Nacho Mama's. Quite good. :-)

I am happy he did not give it 3 1/2 stars, I don't know if the jinx refers to his reviews too, but I don't want to lose this place.

p.s. the cole slaw is awesome there too.

I live very close to Chicken Rico but have not been there yet. I work right by Pollo Latino on Eastern Ave. Their rotisserie chicken is delicious and it's 4.99 for a quarter chicken and two sides. When you get fries as a side they fill the box to the brim, it's wonderful.

Anyone had both Chicken Rico and Pollo Latino care to make a comparison?

Corey, do you mean the Pollo Latino at Bank and Broadway, or is there another one somewhere on Eastern Ave?

I know a Pollo Latino on Lombard, but not Eastern (Chicken Rico is better, but the fried yucca at Pollo Latino was fresher and tastier).

Yea total brainfart there. The Pollo Latino on Broadway is what I was referring to, and I assume Lissa as well.

I've never eaten at Pollo Latino, but I see it a lot 'cause my vet is a few doors down Bank St.

Lissa, if you're talking about the Peruvian chicken place on Lombard across from Santoni's, its name is Pollo Real, not Pollo Latino.

Right, Hal, Pollo Real. Sheesh, I obviously can't tell chicks apart.

I think that might be it about the yucca, Lissa.

Richard, the best fried yucca I've had was at Genesis, on Baltimore a couple blocks east of Tijuana Tacos (which is also pretty danged good), on the north side of the street. Maybe 4 blocks east of Linwood. I can't remember if Genesis is Guatamalan or Ecadoran, but the food was wonderful. I should go back, despite my non-existent Spanish and their non-existent English.

¿Como se feed me?
