New vegan cafe opens Sunday
Are vegans getting a little more love around Baltimore or is that my imagination?
I keep hearing about vegan bakeries and places that are offering more vegan choices on their menus. Now Emily Mainquist tells me she's opening Baltimore's first and only 100 percent vegan cafe and bakery, Emily's Cafe & Desserts in the Stone Mansion at 4901 Springarden Dr.
If she's wrong and there are others, please correct me below. ...
You may already know the bakery's vegan products, which can be found at Wegman's, Whole Foods, Roots Market, the Health Concern among others.
Anyway, Emily's is having its grand opening this Sunday, Nov. 1, starting with brunch. It sounds like a nice location: The new cafe has a six-foot fireplace and a porch for outdoor service when spring gets here.
The cafe has a fundraiser scheduled on Nov. 24 for Compassion Over Killing. It will feature "classic Thanksgiving food-buffet style and all vegan." Well, not exactly classic Thanksgiving food, of course.
The event is from 6p.m. to 9p.m.
Emily's Cafe is open from 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday.

This place appears to be Mt Washington (21209) address but where exactly is it? I know you're reluctant to name a neighborhood, Elizabeth, so a crossing major road would work too!
ah...when spring gets here! I guess it's too early to get glassy eyed thinking about that!

What about the Yabba Pot?

It's in the neighborhood Coldspring Newtown, which is south of Mt. Washington. It's just off Greenspring, between Cold Spring and Northern Parkway, east of Sinai Hospital and south of Cylburn Arboteum.
I hope it gets lots of Sinai customers during the day, because it's not exactly in a well-traveled area. It's hard to look up the street address because it's a private road in the Coldspring Newtown development (note the funny-colored street signs) - not a public street. I think it's hard to find on Mapquest, etc. for that reason.
The menu seems to indicate that non-vegan food will also be offered.

4901 Springarden Dr is found just fine by both Google Maps and MapQuest. At least if one remembers to only include one "g".

Vegans can get love?

What? There's a neighborhood over there?
It's probably only a quarter mile from my house, but I had no idea. It is amazing how an interstate and the falls can completely seperate two adjoining communities.

RoCK... you can see it when the leaves are off the trees, and from Cold Spring heading west to get on the JFX.

only going to get lots of Sinai customers during the day if they deliver. Aint nobody giving up their parking spot to go pick up lunch at that hospital! You'd never find another one!

@Baltofoodie I actually think these may just be vegan versions of the cheese/turkey/egg, etc. I may be wrong but I see this frequently where the items are just labeled the same as if they were not vegan, but are vegan.

Hal -
One did not, in fact, remember to include only one "g". Mea culpa.

yabba pot , owner Sky has been around for awhile and they also sell bake goods and One World Cafe , Sunsplash and another in Towson and Fells Point

Just a note, One World isn't exclusively vegan (they have tuna, for example, and lots of dairy & cheese stuff), although they have lots of vegan options.

I'm generally a very happy vegan, but this pleases me even more. :) Her menu looks delicious!
Brunie's Bakery (in Baltimore) made all our wedding desserts--100% vegan and totally decadent.
FYI, sbutler, One World Cafe is not entirely vegan or even vegetarian.

Did Rob Kasper and/or his blog get the well known Chitrib/Sun ax?
Rob is still with us, thank goodness, but he decided not to be sucked into black hole that is blogging anymore. EL

Considering the most comments I saw on his blog was under 20 and often days would go by without any new posts by Rob I don't think it will be missed by many.

Mmmmmmmmmm ... nothing screams "vegan" like a "Sausage, Egg & Cheese on English Muffin."
Get a clue.

One World Cafe is definitely not vegan friendly. Even their mashed potatoes have dairy, and that's pretty much one of the easiest vegan dishes you could possibly make. Yabba Pot is almost entirely vegan though except the occasional dish with honey.

It's not vegan, but Sarah & Desmond's Bakery & Cafe in downtown Ellicott City is vegetarian bakery and restaurant with lots of vegan items. Great stuff.

per Emily herself, nothing but 100% vegan menu. All of the sausage, egg, cheese things are vegan substitutions.
So, Francine, that would probably be Professor Plum in the library with a candlestick!

@Francine - Vegan restaurants sometimes use words like "cream", "cheese" and "meat" on their menus because they believe that it's understood that they are a vegan restaurant offering vegan versions of familiar foods. Also, it's cumbersome and unappealing to call menu items "fake meat" or "cheese substitute". I don't care for the practice because it, clearly, leads to confusion. Some places use terms like "cheeze" to distinguish them as vegan items.
I'm looking forward to visiting Emily's soon, and often. As a vegan, my options for eating out are truly limited. In addition to more vegan restaurants, I wish more chefs would understand what vegan means and offer a menu option or two for us. I, for one, would eat out a lot more often.

I'm so happy another vegan place is opening in Baltimore. I wonder if the food will be any good. Each time I've sampled cookies and donuts from Emily's they have been not very good. I hope she's improving her skill with the opening of the new restaurant.

Liquid Earth in Fells is by far the best vegan/vegetarian choice in Baltimore. That being said,i'm glad this place and the Yabba Pot are open for people that can't get to Fells Point for lunch!

I have heard some sketchy things about the yabba pot and won't eat there anymore. that is all i will say

I've heard the same sketchy things about the Yabba Pot and won't eat there anymore either.
What's with the anonymous comments reporting rumors? EL
