Late-night places updated

PubDog.JPG

I replied to this e-mail by sending Art the URL for our Top 10 Late-Night Places. The problem is that it's two years old, and certainly needs updating. Suggestions? Additions? Omissions?

Art really must be desperate if he's taking his date to the Dunkin' Donuts on Falls Road. The last time I went there it had run out of Pralines 'n' Cream THE DAY BEFORE and was still out. On the other hand, it had started carrying soft ice cream, which blew me away. Speaking of which, why do regular ice creams require a sugar cone while soft ice cream must be served in a cake cone?

But I digress.

Here's Art: ...

I would appreciate an article on places to go for coffee, or a light dinner after theater. Say in the window from 9 pm to 1 am.

The only places I know are
   TAPAS on Charles
    BLUE MOON on 28th Street
DUNKIN DONUTS on Falls road above Cold Spring.

The same article, or another one could cover all-nite restaurants.

Check out Paper Moon Diner, they used to be open all night, but I think they only serve food until 2am now... But, still within your window

Does Art mean Blue Moon, or Paper Moon, on 29th? Used to be open all night, I think only open until midnight nowadays.

Both moons are open late and are good spots. Sip n Bite and Towson Diner are obvious hot spots. Nacho Mamas carryout is open late.

Can never forget Taco Bell's 4th meal.

I'm with Michael Craven on this one -- Art's reference to "BLUE MOON on 28th Street" must have intended to refer to the Paper Moon Diner. After all, the Blue Moon Cafe is on Aliceanna Street near Broadway in Fells Point, while the Paper Moon is on 29th Street near Howard Street (and pretty close to 28th Street) in Remington. Besides, I doubt that Blue Moon's heavy-breakfast menu is all that conducive to the kind of "light dinner after theater" Art craves.

Pub Dog open till 2 a.m.

No coffee though.

Out here in the Parkville/Hamilton area there is Valentino's open around the clock and a new place, Pita-Pan, open M-T till midnight, Fand S til 2 AM close early sunday for some reason. Tried the pizza, it's okay, like Wildwood boardwalk pizza, subs are good, so are the melts

I had a delicious Subway sub last night at the new 24-hour Subway on the corner of Lombard and Calvert downtown after the game and our postgame Pickles sobfest. It was not nearly as sketchy as I thought it would be.

Not really what Art is looking for, but still thought I'd chime in.

There's always the Double T. As for Paper Moon, I never heard anything good about that place, though mostly just don't come expecting service or a refills for that matter.

Up by Hopkins (on St Paul) is a 24 hour Subway.

Canton's Sip-n-Bite is open all night, although the "after-theatre" crowd is a tad more "after-rave." Good diner menu, though ...

It depends on what day you are going out, also. Many restaurants remain open later on the weekends. Sabatino's in Little Italy is open until midnight during the week.

I've also noticed many restaurants are now offering late night Happy Hours. Those I have come across will start offering specials starting at 10 PM until close. Jack's Bistro on your Top 10 offers a late night HH.

The problem with lots of late-night places is that it seems there's always a caveat.

Pub Dog is fine, but they have no dessert/coffee if that's what you're after. Joe Squared serves food late, I am pretty sure ... but not sure on coffee. No one else has mentioned Nam Kang yet, which will supply you with bottomless glasses of barley tea, but ... coffee? I don' t think so.

Recently checked out Talara in Harbor East, which has a late-night happy hour on Fridays and Saturdays with appetizer and drink specials that starts at 10 p.m. Good option for those leaving a movie at the Landmark.

I would suspect that soft serve ice cream is served in cake cokes because it is more melty. Sugar cones are not really sealed at the bottom and are more prone to leak. Cake cones have a solid bottom thus avoiding that problem.

I always get sugar cones and cake cones mixed up. I like the kind that are like a big cookie with the pointy end, which ones are they?

That is a sugar cone, Joyce. I like that kind, too.

The Zeeba Lounge in Fed Hill serves food late. Their kitchen is open til after 3 on weekends. Not a bad way to sober up-haha.

subway? seriously? might as well mention 7-11's 3 for $3.33 taquitos as late night fare. subway's advertising says "eat fresh" yet you never see anyone actually cutting or preparing any of the meat or vegetables, they come in pre cut and wrapped, weeks before they are served. maybe i'm a sub snob but subway is a step below quizno's and I won't eat there either.

Abacrombie does a late-night menu, perfectly primed for post-theater eating.
