Deep-fried butter: This is not a joke

It's hard to know which side to come down on this...issue. The Star-Telegram is reporting that deep-fried butter is one of the finalists in this year’s annual Big Tex Choice Awards at the State Fair of Texas.

Here's my thinking: Butter = good. But a stick of butter (810 calories) seasoned, battered and deep-fat fried?

I feel another poll coming on.

I love the idea of things that are deep fried, even crazy things like twinkies, ice cream or oreo cookies. And I love butter, in and on everything.

But somehow the idea of the two together leaves me cold.

You've got to realize that this is Texas and your deep fried butter is just an appetizer.
Now the main course is where the really unhealthy eating takes place.

I just got off the phone with a vendor in Texas. I should have asked her about this...

The story doesn't say that they give you an ENTIRE stick of butter -- that might not be cost-effective for the vendor. Maybe it's just half a stick.

I know everything's bigger in Texas. Are their heart attacks bigger, too?

It suggests it, though, by saying 810 calories before being deep-fat fried. EL

After careful consideration, this is only wonderful if it is deep fried in real lard.

Further information from the Dallas Morning News:
" Fried butter is among eight dishes contending for Monday's fifth annual Big Tex Choice Awards, which showcases the top new foods at this year's fair. Fried butter will duke it out with other fine fried foods, including the fried sweet potato, fried peach and fried pork loin.

Deep Fried Butter is the creation of Abel Gonzales Jr., who's received previous Big Tex honors for his Texas Fried Cookie Dough, Fried Coke and Fried Peanut Butter, Jelly and Banana Sandwich.

If there were a Big Tex Fried Food Hall of Fame, Gonzales would be in it.

This year's creation started with a hankering for buttered toast. He wondered how he could incorporate the taste he loved into a State Fair dish.

Scoops of pure butter the size of golf balls are frozen and covered with dough and dropped into the deep fryer. Bite into a ball and melted butter pours out.

This is no health food, but Gonzales says it tastes rich – and good.

"There's nothing better than to have a piece of warm bread with melted butter all over it," Gonzales said. "Who's not going to want that?" "

So it's not a whole stick of butter "only" a golf ball sized scoop of butter. Of course they don't say how many "balls o' butter" there are in each serving.

The recent WI State Fair offered dozens of deep-fried foods. In fact, the local paper (www.jsonline.com) ran a daily feature pointing out "significant" entries. Not sure if butter was available at the fair; somehow I think that the America's Dairyland would have been on the deep-fried-butter bandwagon WAY before Texas!

I'd always heard that the Minnesota State Fair had the most items deep-fried. Which kinda odd, since here in the south they deep fry pretty much everything.

Well, this is another reason that Texas can not be allowed to secede.

Oh my sainted Aunt Lucy, are they KIDding?! I was going to ask how you fry butter, but then I read Rusty's post. Only one word suffices: GACK!!!

Reading Rusty's post, I must ask..exactly how do you fry Coke? It's a liquid. I can picture frying things IN Coke, however. French fries maybe?

FLIRV, Wikipedia has this description (with photo) of fried Coke, which Mr. Gonzales originally concocted for the 2006 Texas State Fair.

Chicken kiev, anyone? That's deep-fried (ok, sauteed, maybe), and when you slice it open, voila, melted butter.

Anyone else ever had deep-fried corn on the cob? Had it in Florida many years ago. Ears of corn, stripped of husks and silk, then dropped naked into the fryer basket for a few minutes. They came out golden and very caramel-y as the sugar in the corn caramelized. Delish! Hardly needed the butter they were so sweet. Just a little S&P. I had 4 in a row and have never seen them since. Any Floridians know of this wonderful summer treat?
