Next Sunday's review: Real Seafood Co.

RealSeafood1.jpgI had to get out of town for next Sunday's review.

Restaurant Week is a killer for critics. Even if a restaurant is offering its regular menu as well as the fixed-price one, I worry that the kitchen's attention is on the special offerings and not what we'll be ordering. Plus the wait staff may be dealing with more than it normally has to.

So next Sunday's review will be of a new Annapolis restaurant, the Real Seafood Co. ...

It's a moderately upscale Michigan-based chain, but a very small one, made up of four restaurants. This is the first one in the Mid-Atlantic.

I'm not sure why a seafood chain would decide to open in Annapolis, which has more than its share of good locally owned places where you can get fish and shellfish, but it seems to be competing successfully. The $19.95 lobster dinner special that's running right now doesn't hurt.

If you want, the waitress will draw on surgical gloves and de-shell it for you at the table, something I haven't seen before. But I'm not sure I could enjoy eating one with its giant 25-foot brother looming over me on the ceiling.

Just kidding.

To see what I thought of our meal, check out my review in next Sunday's Arts & Entertainment section.

EL, that 9:41 comment needs to be removed.

I really hate it that a regular posted a tasteless, borderline obscene comment under another name. It puts me in a bad light if I don't get it and someone like Hal doesn't warn me, and it's stupid and pointless. EL

It was almost funny.

No, it wasn't. This is my job. EL

Yeah, Michigan-based food businesses opening their one and only location outside of Michigan in Maryland is some sort of (small) trend. And I am not sure why Maryland is chosen.

I first saw it when Morely Candy opened their one and only brick and mortar candy store in Millersville in the late 1980's (and closed the Little Caesars Pizza pizza made their mass exodus from the area in the 1990's.)

American Spoon Foods had their one and only brick and mortar away from home right in downtown Annapolis. Sadly, they fell victim to the fire on West Street in December of 1997 and elected not to reopen (and I am still quite broken up over it.)

Now, we have this restaurant. Based on history of Michigan based companies here in MD, I'm apt to try it. If nothing more than to try it before it goes away.

If only we could get Zingerman's to open a location in MD....

No, it wasn't. This is my job. EL

Right. Duly noted!

Oh, and, err, it wasn't me! Just for the record. I take ownership of my tasteless, stupid, and pointless posts. :)

But yeah, yeah, that's... that's a big lobster.
