Eating before the movies

KimCheeNamKang.jpgI like to pretend that I have a normal relationship with food, and then something happens that makes me wonder. A friend and I were going to the movies last night at the Charles, and we talked in the afternoon about where we should go to get a bite to eat first.

Normally we would probably stop in at Tapas Teatro next door; but it was Monday, when it and the crepe place near it are closed. We went back and forth endlessly, mentioning every close-by restaurant we could think of (and between us we know a few) and coming up with reasons why they weren't quite right. ...

Neo Viccino is becoming a sports bar called Turps. Bolton Hill's b is closed Mondays as well.  And so on.

When my friend called back later in the afternoon to continue the conversation, she was in her car; and we were on the phone for another 20 minutes as she cruised up N. Charles Street scouting out possibilities.

That seemed weird even to me.

On the other hand, we couldn't find the place we wanted. In the end we ate at Nam Kang. This is the Korean restaurant a few blocks away best known for being open until 4 a.m. It was OK, and the people were super nice, but it wasn't exactly the cuisine we had had in mind.

I want someone to open a place called the Monday Only Restaurant near the Charles. It would only be opened Mondays, duh; and given the number of people going to the movies last night, there would be a built-in audience.

"In the Loop," by the way, is a laugh-out-loud funny movie.

Ditto on In the Loop. And on it being tough anywhere to find a place to eat on Monday. Is it a liquor license thing? Could a place open and just not service alcohol - or maybe they wouldn't make enough money doing this?

Turps--really? Not Terps?

And what is that shown in the photo (lower left)???

Michelle, I don't think Monday closings have anything to do with liquor licenses. If you work all weekend and Friday and Saturday are your most frenetic days, wouldn't you want Monday off?

Dahlink - I was thinking the same exact thing!

brewer's art is open on mondays. i think dionysus is as well. how about dukem or thai landing?

It could be a sister restaurant to Never on Sundays called Always on Mondays.

Yes! EL

My friends and I were having the same problem trying to find somewhere open on Mondays for Restaurant Week. There's a group of 6 of us that always do RW together and this time Monday night seemed to be the only free night for all of us, but finding a restaurant we wanted to eat at that was open on Mondays was impossible. We finally gave up on Monday and switched to Sunday.
I understand why Monday is a good day for restaurants to close if they are going to be closed one day, but it would still be nice to have a few more non-bar options if you want to eat out on a Monday night.

Dahlink, lower left in the photo would be Nam Kang's delectable kim chee.

Thanks, pgp!

Crush is not only open Mondays, but they have a half price special on bottles of wine (if you order food!)

Dahlink, the name Terps is a trademark of the University of Maryland, which has used the name since 1933, according to the USPTO online database. I suspect that the University has been vigilant in preventing sports bars from infringing on its trademark, since I couldn't find any using that name.

Joe^2 might have fulfilled your needs, on the corner of North and Howard.

We thought of it, but were worried about parking. EL

Yes, Joe Squared was where we ate before our last movie at the Charles. We didn't think we had enough time for pizza, so I had a very good sandwich and my wife had a great order of risotto.

Park wherever you park for the Charles and walk. It's close, and we've never had any trouble on the walk.

better than namkang would've been nakwon or jonggak on 20th street (left on 20th going up charles). quality is better in either of those two imo.

Also, with Joe squared, if you were intent on driving, instead of walking down north ave, I find there to be usually ample parking on maryland south of North. Their new Mexican joint will also be a draw, i'm sure.

otherwise, if you're driving, there's all of mount vernon that's close (though parking could be tough).

hmpstd has it exactly right. While I was there the trademark enforcing meanies forced the shutdown of a frequently hilarious website that was disparaging the Terps' good name. RIP terpidiots.com

I think years ago no one ate out on Mondays, but I think that has changed.

I've spoken with quite a few people who work at moderately priced restaurants, and they've all said that Mondays are busier than you would think.

I think in many ways people don't want to cook on Mondays, so they end up going out instead. Now they are not going to the high end restaurants on Monday, but they are going out.

Tuesday, however, have become the old Mondays. Nobody goes out on Tuesdays.

I love Nam Kang and OK equals GREAT at 4am! Matt's right, Jong Kak is better.

RoCK, my hairdresser says that Friday's the new Saturday. It makes sense, many more people go out Thursday nights now because they are off on Friday or figure they just have one more day of hell to get through before the weekend. So, in moving Thursday to Friday, Friday becomes Saturday and Saturday becomes the leisurely day of rest that Sunday used to be because now everyone is freaking out on Sundays because they have to go to work the next day.

I can't buy into Mondays or Tuesdays out though. Still too much work hell to get through.

just for the record..the chef needs a day off...hence most restaurants are closed Mondays-
Monday continues to be the least profitable day in the restaurant business.

EL This comment should answer your question "when's the Chef's day off." If the Restaurant is open Monday, the Chef isn't there!

Dahlink & Trixie,
The manager's nickname is Turp.

Joyce W. is onto something with Saturday being the new Sunday (leisure day).

But I do have impulses to go out or get takeout on Mondays, I think because the shock of re-entering the work world makes me not want to do any work cooking when I get home (or I'm so traumatized I just need a good food fix). I'm disappointed so many places in my neighborhood are closed on Mondays.

I never eat out Tuesdays. By then, Monday trauma is over, focusing on rest of work week.

Don't like eating out Sundays either, unless it is brunch, because the Sunday Dreads (described well by Joyce W.) start to set in about 3 p.m.

Several businesses I patronize are one Saturdays, but closed Sundays and Mondays. That gives them a two-day weekend, just like everybody else. Pastore's, Mastellone's, Trinacria, Woodlea Bakery, and my hairdresser immediately come to mind.

Could it be that businesses close on Mondays because theaters are traditionally "dark" on Mondays?

My wife's hair dresser, Mr Ray, is always off on Sundays and Mondays. He favors Haussner's or the Chesapeake on his day off.

I think driving around a neighbourhood in advance, scouting out where to eat is perfectly normal. I tend to use google maps for that these days, though.

Don, Mr Ray is still eating at Haussner's??

Trixie, Don Draper's a "Mad Men" character. The show is set in the early '60s and the season opener had them in Baltimore, eating at Haussner's.

Ohh, now I feel a little foolish! That and me reversing the whole "patron touching server" thing on the other post yesterday. I had cashiers and mechanics groping people...I swear this job just keeps getting in the way.

Your job is groping peole, Trixie?

I really like Nam Kang. There's something about it that is just appealing and right. I'm planning on convincing the boyfriend that he wants to eat in a little subterranean restaurant this Saturday! *grin*

Your job is groping peole, Trixie?

This Peole?

one more suggestion. Yakitori one is near there as well. it'll definitely be lighter fare than korean if that's what you were hoping for.

I have heard that Yakitori One is closed for renovation ...

Actually Don, I know Mr. Ray, of the famous hair weave commercials and he really prefers to dine at Danny's on North Charles Street except when he can get into the University Club.

When ever I work on shows in Catonsville we go out to Jennings on Fridays and Saturdays after the show, which I did the last two weekends. The place is jumping Friday nights, but Saturday you could throw fastballs in there and never hit anyone.

In space, sean, no one can hear you say no.

So, what movie?
