Words of wisdom from a Zen master, part three

Over breakfast my husband said out of the blue, "Your next Top 10 falls on Bastille Day."

Since I'm never sure he even reads my blog, that was startling. It's also a bit awkward because I've already announced I was doing Tex-Mex restaurants. It would be one thing if I were listing, say, summer treats; but a specific cuisine seems like a slap in the face of francophiles. ...

Should I switch to Top 10 Best French Restaurants? It might be amusing to see how I justify choices six through 10 since there are only about five French restaurants in the area, best or worst. Or maybe I should pretend I didn't know it was Bastille Day.

If I can't decide, I'll use the Zen master's method of choice, which has gotten me through worse fixes: When in doubt, Plan A.

Oh, please do something French-themed. The tex-mex idea seems to be causing indigestion!

Maybe you could list 10 places with Bastille Day Specials?

EL, it probably doesn't matter because this group will somehow cleverly tie in Bastille Day/French restaurants or veer off in that direction anyway.

How about Top 10 Revolutionary restaurants? That ties in with storming the Bastille.

Aujourd'hui est l'heure d'améliorer la plus grande cuisine au monde!

I will traslate for you! Puh on silly Texy-mexy you know, ride your donkey do not make it food. Honor the grand tranditions of cuisine that we have given you.

It doesn't have to be a whole French restaurant. There must be hundreds of great French-inspired dishes all over the town. Make it top ten dishes to celebrate Bastille Day.

boxy,
I have the first three:

1. French fries
2. French toast
3. A salad with French dressing

Oh, I forgot....

Cake!

Didn't one of those French emperors tell the rioting masses to let them eat cake? If I correctly recall the history I was taught, it didn't turn out too well for the emperor.

That was supposedly Marie Antoinette, but the cake was a lie, PCB Rob.

The tex-mex post comments have been so incredibly negative, as in 1) there are few to no good tex-mex places here, or 2) tex-mex is inherently "inauthentic" and somehow unworthy of any diners, so why not celebrate Bastille Day instead? (though no doubt the nattering nabobs of negativity will show up anyway, under one name or another)

Well, both Top 10s are happening anyway, because I'm never sure how many different names one person uses to be negative. Whenever I bother to check IP addresses, it's a lot. EL

I say let them eat chimichangas.

Is a chimichanga Tex-Mex, or is it what Rob Kasper would call Az-Mex?

Given the popularity of fusion cuisine these days, perhaps some entrepeneur (can't escape the French lingo) will take a hint from our quandry and open a restaurant that specializes in Franco-Tex-Mex. I can almost taste the Carne Bourginon. And the Tostada avec coq. Lyonaisse refried beans, Monsieur? Another turbot taco, Senor? The mind boggles. As does the stomach. But should anyone take up the challenge, please be sure to credit the culinary cultural con-fusion to Dining@Large.

MAG -- with our luck, some local entrepreneur will open a Franco-American-Tex-Mex restaurant.

If I were to open up a Franco-Mexican restaurant, I'd call it Cuatro de Mayo

PCB Rob,
I believe the quote was "Let them eat cakes." Cakes were small, inexpensive bisquit-like products.

Suddenly I'm craving an escargot empanada.

The is a restaurant on Bestgate Road in Annapolis (the name escapes me right now but it's very near the animal hospital) that serves French-Salvadoran cuisine-- an interesting combination. I've been tempted to try it but usually have had a very sick dog with me, or circumstances were too sad and I had no appetite.

RayRay wrote I believe the quote was "Let them eat cakes." I thought she said "Let them eat brioche."
